Remodeling a Small Bathroom on a Tiny Budget

Ways to Remodel Your Bathroom Without Flushing Your Budget

Sophie Walton
I have a very small bathroom connected to my bedroom so I have always had a challenge when trying to remodel that bathroom. Short of knocking down a few walls, I wondered what I could do to remodel my small bathroom on my budget. I began pouring over remodeling magazines and websites looking for ideas that I could use to remodel my small bathroom and found several ideas that were inexpensive but had a gigantic impact on my bathroom.

Storage - One of the problems in small bathrooms is the lack of storage. The issue is space - there is never enough space in small bathrooms to add additional cabinets for storage without loosing precious floor space. My solution to this problem was an over the toilet cabinet unit. Bathroom remodeling sometimes requires you to work with what you have and this unit does exactly that. It provides more storage space, elegant bathroom design and does not take up any floor space. I choose the Magick Woods Dark Chocolate model at Lowe's for only $381.28. I loved the elegant look but do not worry, if this is not your style there are hundreds of these units in various prices and styles.

Shower - Unfortunately, no matter how much I wanted to replace my tub and shower, I just could not fit this into my bathroom remodeling budget. I really hated those shower doors though and wanted more room in my shower (of course, I really wanted to rip the but out and install a shower twice the size of the tub but my husband fainted at that idea). Instead, I purchased and installed a curved shower rod. These are great for giving you the feeling of having a larger tub and shower without taking up any additional room. The Crescent Rod Oil-Rubbed Bronze Curved Rod for $49.99 from Bed, Bath & Beyond was a great deal and very easy to install. It looks great with the new cabinet above.

Flooring - The last bathroom remodeling project that I tackled was the flooring. The old linoleum flooring that had been there when we purchased the house had long since ceased to be appealing. I wanted something beautiful and decided to put the majority of my budget into this bathroom remodeling project. This is where the size of a small bathroom actually will be a benefit to you rather than an impediment. Since you are working with a small space, you can afford to purchase a more expensive floor covering when remodeling your bathroom. I found beautiful glazed porcelain floor tile at Home Depot. The one I choose is a more of a gray than this one and was on sale in the store that weekend for $0.99 per square foot. Ceramic and porcelain tile is not that difficult to install and in a small bathroom, it is affordable. This flooring made a great addition to my small bathroom and looks fantastic.
