Remove Pet Stains from Your Carpet

Megan Ally
Anyone who owns a pet knows that sometimes accidents happen, but when they do they leave a nasty stain and an unpleasant odor behind. Well lucky for you, I have a few tips and tricks to help you remove pet stains and odor from your carpet. If your pet has a bowl movement on the carpet, gently scrape the solid waste off of the carpet. Be careful not to rub or press it into the carpet. If your pet urinated on the carpet, use a paper towel or newspaper to soak up as much as possible. Make sure you blot the carpet, not rub it. For the next step, you have a few different options. I will detail each option below.

The first option involves using a commercial brand stain remover. This option is probably the easiest method for removing pet stains and odor and I would recommend trying it first. Buy a stain remover (such as Spot Shot) from the store. Follow the directions on the spray can. Make sure you do not rub the spray into the carpet, but rather blot it dry. This will work on solid and liquid accidents.

The second method involves Windex window cleaner. I didn't think this option would really work, but it did. You simply spray Windex on the stain and let it soak for a little bit. Then blot it dry with a paper towel. This should remove pet stains and odor.

The next technique uses vinegar. For this method you mix water and vinegar using a 50:50 ratio. Spray it on the stain, let it soak, and then blot dry.

This next method calls for ordinary toothpaste. This one seems odd, and I haven't personally tired it but I have heard that it works. You put the toothpaste on the stain and then use an old toothbrush to scrub it. Blot with a wet towel afterwards.

The next idea I have for you is an ammonia solution. Mix 2 tablespoons ammonia with one cup of water. Blot the carpet with the solution and then blot with warm water.

The final suggestion I have that should help you get rid of pet stains and odors is to mix laundry detergent or dishwashing detergent with warm water. Mix laundry detergent or dishwashing detergent with water in a 50:50 ratio. Blot on the stain and then blot with warm water to cleanse the area.

With each of these methods, I recommend trying a test patch of carpet in an unnoticeable area to ensure that they will not damage your carpet.

Hopefully these tips will help you remove pet stains and odor from carpet. Good luck!
