Removing an Old Tree from Your Garden

Elena Newell
Although no one like the thought of cutting down an old tree it may sometimes become essential to do so. It may be that the tree is dying and may eventually fall by itself causing accidents. Or it may be that the old tree is getting too close to a power line or it has become diseased or some other valid reason. Rather than wait for some mishap to take place it may be prudent to remove the old tree altogether.

The method used for removing an old tree will depend on the height and girth of the tree. Whatever methods you choose, you have to plan ahead for its removal so that the process goes smoothly without any mishap. Many windows have been smashed, many cars have been crushed and many injuries have been caused by unplanned and improper cutting down of trees If the tree is too large and you have no experience of removing large trees then it is better to seek professional help. If the tree is more than 1 foot in diameter then you may need professionals for the job.

If the tree is of medium height and diameter you can certainly remove it with the help of adult and strong family members or friends. Ideally you should have at least two people to help you. The more the better. The best tool for cutting down a tree is the chainsaw. If you don't own one then ask your friends, and if you can't borrow one then rent one. You will have better control over the cutting process with a chain saw than with an ax. You will also need long and strong ropes to hold and slow down its fall. Or if you intend to pull it down with your truck then you will need a rope also. You will also need a ladder.

Once you have made the preparations find out if there are some branches that you can cut down first with the chain saw. This will lighten the load of the tree when it is brought down and it will be easy to maneuver. It is not absolutely necessary to cut down branches beforehand but if it can be done conveniently then it is better. Be sure to remain away from or above a branch while removing and make sure that no one is under it, especially excited children. If small children are around then put them under an adults charge.

When you are ready to cut down the tree you should accurately determine the direction in which you want the tree to fall. Use proper eye and face protection and also gloves. Many people have sustained eye injuries and even have been blinded from flying chips. Don't take any chances. Keep other portions of your body covered for extra precaution as the flying splinters are like missiles. If you have never operated a chainsaw earlier then first practice on a block of wood until you can operate it comfortably. Your safety and also that of others should be of utmost importance when removing a tree. Keep others away from the flying chips.

For cutting down the tree first tie two long and strong ropes at the top and anchor them on the side opposite to the side to which the tree will fall. Then cut a V on the side you want the tree to fall. Then saw on the opposite side having the ropes anchored and held by your companions all the while. After some time the tree will start to tilt and the exact direction and speed of fall can be controlled with the help of the ropes. You can also pull down the tree after some sawing by tying the top to a truck or tractor. Make sure that that the rope is long enough so that the tree doesn't crash on the vehicle. You can either dig out the stump or better still you can rent a stump chipper and use it to remove the visible portion of the stump.
