Removing a Tree Stump

So you have a tree stump you want to get rid of; it is time to finally remove tree stumps the right way. There are 2 different ways that will be covered in this article: manually remove tree stump in step 1 and remove tree stump away faster than nature by rotting and using a chain saw for the bulk of the removal for the remaining steps.

You will need:

Tree stump

Chain saw

Water source

Mattock

Drill with bit

Nitrogen rich fertilizer (45-0-0) or cow manure

Organic mulch 1 bag
Plastic tarp and a 4 stones

Step 1: Use the broad end of the mattock to dig around the stump's base to begin removal. Using the axe end of the mattock, chop through the tree roots until you are able to see the taproot. This will be beneath a large root ball directly under the bulk of the tree stump. Chop through this and all roots surrounding, and thus you have concluded removing your tree stump.

Step 2: Use the chain saw to cut the tree stump down as close to the ground as possible, so there is less tree stump to treat. Do not let the saw's teeth hit the ground as this will dull the chain terribly. Drill 4 holes about 3 inches deep into the remaining stump with your widest drill bit. Fill the holes with water and then add a high nitrogen fertilizer such as cow manure.

Step 3: Soak the stump and surrounding ground with water and then cover the stump with the tarp. This will help to hold the moisture in and will cause it to rot. Place the 4 stones on the 4 corners of the tarp to hold it in place. Add a layer of mulch over the top of the tarp and then soak it with water. This holds moisture and will also help to weigh the tarp down as well as rotting the stump from the outside.

Step 4: Remove the mulch and tarp once a week and soak the stump and ground again, and then reapply the tarp and mulch as well as the cow manure. Continue to do this until the stump is rotted out of the ground.

Stump Remover is a product that breaks down the fiber of the stump and will make it porous. This method for removing tree stumps will take longer than simply cutting down the tree stump, but it will also guarantee that it does not grow back. To remove tree stumps, it is important that you not give it light or it will grow back. Remove tree stumps in the easiest way possible, or the most efficient way viable for your situation.
