Renewed Interest in Newt Gingrich

Lorraine Yapps Cohen

New interest arises for Newt Gingrich, the GOP candidate who stands staid and steadfast while others rise and decline in the polls.

The GOP debates brought out the worst rather than the best in the candidates. Many believe they were designed to do exactly that. And if the debates didn't tarnish the GOP candidates to some degree, the aftermath did. Witness the scandalous revelations that broke in the media after each one.

Now for Newt

Now it's time for Newt's steady rise, as if no one paid attention to the most competent character in the debates. He has it all: experience and intelligence, stands for conservative values and American exceptionalism, speaks well while delivering his messages clearly, and knows how to get things done in Washington.

Know what you don't get with Newt

No hidden agendas.
No shady friends.
No secret birth certificates.
No liaisons with political gangsters.
No favors for cronies to bankroll campaigns.
No yearning for rock star fame.
No lurid looking at your paycheck to give it to others.
No faux facades.
No jealousy if another GOP candidate gets in.

It was Gingrich who remarked that any one of the candidates on the debate stages with him would make a better president than the one we have now. That is a man speaking from the competence to know what the country needs and the confidence to get it done.

Mitt meets his match

With Gingrich's current rise to favor, can we expect--like the others--to witness his downfall later? Unlike the others, Mitt Romney remains steady, resisting the roller coaster of favor followed by decline.

That's because Romney looks politically more like Obama than any other GOP candidate. Besides, he's the media favorite for the same reason. The media will love him then leave him once the nomination is secured, just like the other candidates' waves of favor and fall.

It will be different for Newt Gingrich. He can withstand the slurs thrown at the behavior in his private affairs. His resilience allows him to rise above it. After all, what relevance do past personal matters have on one's ability to manage a nation? None, for people with their priorities properly aligned.

If we're looking for a saint, we won't find one in Gingrich. Nor does he qualify as The People's Charismatic Messiah. Rather, he carries his competence, courage, and character as conservative values aimed at bringing America back to the great America it can be again. No other candidate comes close to showing as much.

I like Newt, and am watching him closely. So far, he's kept an even keel, and managed to avoid any major gaffes. You are right that past transgressions shouldn't matter if you are competent and if your transgressions aren't serious, but I'll bet a dollar against a doughnut that if Newt gains traction in the coming weeks, we'll see the old tried and true Democrat/Liberal smear campaign against Newt crank into high gear...

You do such a great job on your articles! I am still confused as to which candidate to pick but there is much time! Thanks

Mike suggested that Gingrich might be the candidate. I disagreed. Regardless of his competency, he's viewed as a mean man by most people. Voters want to love their president and Gingrich is a difficult man to love. (Where's Ronald Regan's replacement!!!)

I would be more tempted to vote for Newt than any of the other GOP candidates (at least the ones that have a chance at the nomination). At least he has a brain and doesn't always say what's politically correct or the GOP talking points!

Hmmm. You bring up some interesting points about old Newt. I admit I haven't been tolerating him because of his less than saintly past. Probably because I don't tolerate my own less than saintly past. But...maybe I need to reconsider. Maybe we do know what we need to know about him. Maybe he is a viable option. This is something I'm gonna have to think about.
