Renovate Your Kitchen: Kitchen Updating Ideas

Jennifer Eblin
The kitchen is the center of your home and the place where your family congregates on a daily basis. Whether you share meals together or use the room as a meeting space, it's a room you see fairly often. Updating your kitchen gives the space a fresh look and makes the room feel more welcoming. Ideas on how to renovate a kitchen include some inexpensive ways to remodel the space.

The Kitchen Triangle

The kitchen triangle is composed of the three most often used areas of the kitchen: the refrigerator, stove and sink. You spend more time in those three areas, than you do any other area of the kitchen. When you update your kitchen, make sure those three areas are closely situated to each other to minimize your work. It should take only a few seconds to carry food from the refrigerator to the sink for food cleaning and only a few seconds from the sink to the stove for cooking. Work the design of your room around the kitchen triangle by arranging those areas into a triangular shape first and then laying out the other elements of the room.

Cabinet Facelift

Updating the cabinets in your kitchen gives the space an instant facelift. If your budget allows, then go all out and install new cabinets in the room. For smaller budgets, work with the existing cabinets in the room. Replace the existing hardware with new pieces in a completely different color or finish. Make sure that the hardware you choose matches the finish of any fixture or appliances in the room for a more polished effect. Painting or staining the cabinets in a new color also gives the kitchen an updated appearance.

New Counters

Replace the tired and worn out counters in your kitchen with new ones in an entirely new color or design. Modern choices include poured concrete counters and tiled counters. If you opt for tiled counters, then carry the tiles over into a backsplash that adds color to another area of the kitchen, while maintaining a flow.

Add More Storage

Kitchen storage has come a long way in modern times. Storage options now add a design aesthetic to the room. Made from metals or brightly colored plastics, the storage adds even more color to the room. Consider removing the doors on several cabinets in the kitchen or replacing the existing doors with glass doors. Display some of your favorite storage options in those cabinets.
