The first public photos of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in recovery were released via Giffords' Facebook page early Sunday, and the public is very excited. Gabby Giffords, as she's known to her constituents, is smiling in the just-released photographs seen here, which were taken by local Tucson photojournalist P.K. Weis.
The Tucson native and representative, who was shot in the head at point-blank range during the Tucson shooting back in January, is seen alone in one photograph, and seated with her mother in another. They are both calm, serene images of a seemingly happy Gabby Giffords sitting in the outdoors.
Gabby Giffords Photos Taken After Endeavour Launch Show Congresswoman Happy
The just-released Gabrielle Giffords photos seen here were taken on May 17, just one day after her husband, Mark Kelly, commanded the last Endeavour shuttle launch and mission to space. The Congresswoman attended the launch, and was said to be "beaming" after watching her husband take off.
The new photos of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords tell a complex story. The shorter hair is a reminder of what Rep. Giffords has been through physically; a reminder that her head was shaved to perform surgeries on her brain following being struck down in the Tucson shooting. A reminder that it all happened, it was all real, and the madness and recklessness of it all will haunt us forever.
The photos remind us of something else, though. The photos show Congresswoman Gabby Giffords smiling, feeling joy. She looks bright-eyed, aware and determined. She also looks peaceful, and we sincerely hope that is indeed what she was feeling when those photos were snapped. We also sincerely hope that people find the same peace Gabby appears to be displaying when they view the images.
You can see just how incredible Gabby looks right here in the official photos by P.K. Weis, released by Gabrielle Giffords and her camp on Facebook this weekend!
