Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is no longer in the headlines. So, I went searching today for information on her health and discovered some good news about her recovery.
In case you were living in a cave or under a rock in January, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head on January 8, 2011 outside a Safeway store while doing her first "Congress on Your Corner" gathering with her constituents. She sustained a brain injury and miraculously survived.
Rep. Giffords is now in Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston undergoing physical therapy in their Institute for Rehabilitation and Research. She is improving each day and walking and talking.
Her husband, Mark Kelly, is an astronaut and commander of the spaceship Endeavor. He spoke at a NASA press event last Thursday, March 24, 2011 regarding the planned NASA launch next month. CBS covered the event on "the early show". Kelly told viewers that his wife is now beginning to process the events of that fateful day and that she will likely attend his spaceship launch in Florida.
Jared Lee Loughner, the suspect accused of shooting Rep. Giffords was indicted March 3, 2011 on 49 counts, including murder and attempted murder. On March 9, 2011, he plead not guilty to all 49 counts. Last Wednesday, March 23, Loughner was moved to a federal Bureau of Prisons medical facility in Missouri to undergo mental competency testing.
