Rep. Lamborn Continues Wave of Anti-Obama Hate Speech

Colorado Republican Refers to President Obama as 'Tar Baby'

COMMENTARY | I don't know how much more ignorance I can stand, especially coming from our politicians in Washington. The latest comment, made by U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn, R-Colo., is not just racist and ignorant, but shows the ultimate in disrespect to the president of the United States.

On a Denver radio show, Lamborn said, according to the Huffington Post, "Even if some people say, 'Well the Republicans should have done this or they should have done that,' they will hold the President responsible. Now, I don't even want to have to be associated with him. It's like touching a tar baby and you get it, you're stuck, and you're a part of the problem now and you can't get away."

What has happened to our country? I thought we'd at least had some progress in moving away from racial prejudice. I am whiter than white bread, and, frankly, I often find that political correctness goes too far. I don't get offended easily. But this is unacceptable, and I feel outraged.

When has it become acceptable to treat our president the way some of these ultra right-wing bigots have done? Lamborn sent a letter to President Obama "apologizing for using a term some find insensitive."

Some find insensitive? Mr. Lamborn, you are an embarrassment to your community and to the White House.

Lamborn says it was just a "misunderstanding." If he truly did not know the derogatory meaning of the term "tar baby," I'd say he must have been living in a deep, dark hole for the last 50 years.

Eli Bremer, the chair of the El Paso County Republican Party, stated that Lamborn's comment was not intended as a reference to Obama's skin color. How often have you heard the term when not used as a negative racial reference?

It sounds like Lamborn is trying to kick President Obama off the bus, and in more ways than one.

Bremer goes as far as saying, "It's disgraceful that anyone would try and insinuate that he was being racist," reports The Vancouver Sun. Actually, it's disgraceful, Mr. Bremer, that you are defending this man's actions.

County Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Ricker commented, "I am ashamed to call Doug Lamborn the federal representative for my community. For all that we try to do to convince the nation that our community is not a backwards, hateful, area, this foolish man speaks before thinking because he believes that politically he is invincible and invulnerable."

Back in April, a southern California Tea Party activist and member of the central committee of the Orange County Republican Party, Marilyn Davenport, sent a hate email to fellow conservative party members. The email had a picture of Obama's family with his parents as chimpanzees. According to CBS Los Angeles, the wording above it read, "Now you know why -- No birth certificate!"

Davenport was asked if she felt the email was appropriate, and she responded , "...It was a joke. I have friends who are black."

The big joke is on all the American people. The more hate that is dished out, the worse our country becomes, and the more challenging it gets for Obama to guide our country back to the leader it once was.
