Replacing Worn or Plain Baseboard Moldings

Sandra Ketcham
Replacing worn or plain baseboards is a simple way to update the look of a room. Baseboard molding is applied to the area of a wall where it meets the floor, and is used to conceal the gap between these two surfaces and to protect the wall from damage caused by shoes or furniture. Baseboard molding is more than just functional, however. Baseboards can bring depth and character to a room when used properly.

Baseboard molding is generally 2 to 8 inches high, and can be found in a variety of shapes and styles. The taller and more decorative the baseboard molding, the more impact it will have on the look and feel of the room. Baseboard molding is also available with LED lights to add accent lighting to a room or to highlight floors.

When choosing baseboard molding for your home, be sure to choose as few joints as possible for a more even look, and consider size as well as style when making your purchase. A baseboard that is too small will go unnoticed, while a large or very ornate molding might be overpowering in a small or casual room. Decide in advance whether you would like to paint or stain your baseboard molding, and choose a product that allows you that option.

Be careful to avoid defective molding by carefully checking for any imperfections, such as dents or knots, before purchasing. It is always an excellent idea to buy more molding than is needed for each wall in case damage occurs during installation. It is also wise to avoid mixing and matching molding styles, as baseboards should provide a continuity from room to room. So make certain to buy replacement pieces to be used in the future should your design be discontinued.

Baseboard molding can be quite expensive, but is worth the money. Always purchase the best quality baseboards that you can afford. This is a project that you shouldn't skimp on, as better quality material will last longer and look better. Choose stronger wood with fewer defects, or consider buying baseboard molding made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) or urethane composites.

One way to save money when updating your baseboards is to install them yourself. If that task seems too complicated, most sources of baseboard molding provide installation services - often for free. Both Lowe's and The Home Depot offer a wide variety of baseboard molding and will install your baseboards for you. Vintagewoodworks.com is an excellent source for baseboard molding online, and will send you a step-by-step installation booklet at no cost when you place an order with them.
