Repo-Man

Wikipedia calls this film a "cult film." The film premiered in 1984. The film was directed by Alex Cox, and produced by Jonathan Wacks and Peter McCarthy. The cast includes: Emilio Estevez, Harry Dean Stanton, and Susan Barnes.

You've only to watch this film for 20 minutes to know it's a cult film. The film is dubbed "Comedy-Drama." I'm including this film because it brings a comedic element to the lives of "car repossession men."

Otto Maddox (Estevez) is a young punk rocker living in 1980s Los Angeles. He's as rebel and screwed up as can be. His parents are potheads who have giving all their money to a television priest. One of the movies' cult moments is when Otto asks his parents for money they had supposedly saved for him to go to school. His parents tell him the money he's inquiring about has in fact been donated to this television priest to supply Bibles for people in El Salvador.

Depressed and broke, Otto is enticed by Bud (Harry Dean Stanton) who asks him to drive his wife's car in exchange for $20.00. When Otto arrives at the destination, he finds out that in fact it wasn't his wife's car he was driving home; Otto realizes he just helped Bud repossess a vehicle from a couple who hadn't been keeping up with the car's monthly payments.

At first Otto is really turned off by his new line of work, but in just a short period of time he starts to enjoy it. Drugs are amongst some of the perks his new line of business makes available for him.

The cult part of the film comes when all of a sudden: every repo-man under the sun is searching for a 1964 Chevy Malibu from New Mexico. This Malibu is overvalued at $21,000 (even Cadillac's didn't cost this in 1984). The car contains something powerful and mysterious in its trunk...Director Alex Cox worked as a repossession man...the "aliens story" associated with the film was just an extra thrown in by him.

The film is quite entertaining. The film can be purchased at Amazon.com, Netflix.com, getdvdprices.com, eBay.com, or half.com
