There have been many reports of miraculous cures for various diseases. There are so many of these that I decided to categorize them by disease class. In the future I may review reports of miraculous cures in psychiatry.
I have been skeptical of some of these reports, particularly when a lot of money is to be made by the drug companies with a product.
There are reports of healing foods in cardiology. For example, the banana is supposed to be good for hypertension because it is high in potassium, low in calories, high in fiber, low in sodium, and low in fat.
Orthomolecular Reports on the Heart
Although Pauling invented the term "orthomolecular" in 1968, some work was done prior to that which inspired Pauling to favor the use of natural substances for healing. Some of this work was done by the Shute brothers, who used vitamin E to treat various forms of heart disease. This work impressed Pauling. This was a safe treatment that worked.
"Pioneer vitamin E researchers and clinicians Drs. Wilfrid and Evan Shute treated some 30,000 patients over several decades and found that people in average health received maximum benefit from 800 IU of the d-alpha tocopherol form of vitamin E." Dr. Andrew Saul (1)
Ref. 2 found great benefit from the use of vitamin E.
"Two landmark studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine [1 ][ 2] followed a total of 125,000 men and women health care professionals for a total of 839,000 person study-years. It was found that those who supplement with at least 100 IU of vitamin E daily reduced their risk of heart disease by 59 to 66%." Saul (1)
Saul's Refs. 1 & 2 are reproduced here as my Refs. 3 & 4.
Vitamin E: A Miracle Worker for the Heart?
Ref. 5 examined the simultaneous use of vitamin E and vitamin C. This very large study reported a lower risk of total mortality and coronary mortality. This study supports the theories of the Shute brothers and of Linus Pauling. According to Saul (6), there is not even one death per year from vitamins.
Pauling
Pauling's work is being backed by Saul. Dr. Rath, who worked with Pauling (7), is still alive and still backs their cardiovascular theory. They favored 6 gram doses of vitamin C and also 6 gram doses of lysine, which is an amino acid.
Conclusions
Pauling also studied cancer, which he also thought was fought by vitamin C. He thought it not only prevented certain forms of cancer, but he and Cameron also thought that it fought against active cancer. Pauling also did a cancer study with Hoffer, and similar results were reported.
More research is needed. For the heart Saul favors a "hearty" breakfast (1). It appears that the orthomolecular approach is very promising. There are drugs for the heart, but they have bad side effects (1).
