Republican Party's Future is Grim

Can the Republican Party Rebuild Their Image?

Howard Roark
The Republican Party held the reigns of the country for the last twelve years in congress and the last eight years in the presidency. During those years they had the power to vastly shrink the size of government, reduce federal spending, and maintain a humble foreign policy, which in fact are all standards that you hear republicans preaching. They put President Reagan on a pedastel for being the supreme republican president, who defended freedom, passed some of the greatest tax cuts, and halted the growth of government.

So what happened? During the twelve years our republican party held the power of congress we saw some of the highest growth in federal spending in the history of the United States. We saw president bush allowing the spending to go on by never using the power of the veto, even though he supposedly believed in reducing the scope of government and government spending, which is what all republicans beleive is it not? What happened was that republicans got drunk with power, they got comfortable. They saw the democrats out of power and they no longer had to follow their traditional standards anymore. That is until the american people got sick of it.

The american people want change. And they showed it in the last congressional election, the republicans lost both the house and the senate, an enourmous defeat for teh republican party. People were sick of all of our foreign entanglements, people were sick of too much government, people were sick of giving up every last drop of freedoms they owned due to the constant muckraking of the fear of terrorism. So if these were the problems people were sick of wouldn't you elect a republican? Isn't that what republicans have been saying since Barry Goldwater starting the modern conservatism movement? Well the answer to this is that republicans have lost their way. The Bush administration have shaped the republican party into a militant, big government party that has absolutely destroyed the face of the republican party.

The republicans are in a world of hurt and are facing a major obstacle that they probably won't be able to climb with the candidates that they have. The american people aren't happy with the war in Iraq, and they don't want a war in Iran, and there is only one candidate in the republican party that is running off of a humble foreign policy and the withdrawel from Iraq, that man is Ron Paul. The problem is not many people know about Ron paul and he really doesn't stand much of a chance. So what are people going to do? They don't have a choice, they are going to have to switch their party if they want to get out of Iraq. So already the republican party not only has lost a large portion of their base, people who believe in smaller government, but now they have lost all the people that enjoyed the humble foreign policy of the republican party.

To make matters worse, fund raising has reflected fairly accurately the desire of the people for change. The republicans haven't even came close to keeping up with the democrats on fundraising. If the republicans didn't already have enough to worry about due to their failures in office, now they are going to have a tough time rebuilding the faith of the people due to innefficient funds. The democratic candidates are going to be able to afford to more effectively run their campaigns, while having larger staff.

So the question is, can the republicans pull it off? Maybe, but the outlook is grim.

Good essay, but the Dumbascrap party is as bad as the Repugnantscam Party for building a giant bureaucracy of a government. Dr. Ron Paul has, as his campaign motto, "Hope for America." It should be "The Only Hope for America!"
