Republicans Playing Political Games with Health Care

Tony Daniels
As the debate over national health care continues between The White House and The Congress of the United States, it is becoming clear that the Republican Party has chosen to play political games.

Republicans continue to oppose President Obama's health care plan while millions of Americans face an uncertain future without health care coverage.

Although Obama's plan may not be perfect, like the old saying goes: "it's better than nothing at all."

I f the plan needs to be tweaked; an adjustment can always be made after it has been signed into law.

Why are Republicans resistant to passing a health care plan?

Fear.

Republicans are afraid that if Obama's health care plan becomes law, it will mean competition for an industry that has operated as a monopoly since the beginning of time. The cheaper services that would be provided under the Obama plan would almost certainly cause many citizens to switch from their current health plans to the lower cost government plan.

The ensuing loss of patients and revenue would be significant enough to cause many current health providers to either go out of business, cut back staff/costs or reduce their ballooned rates in order to compete with the government plan.

The loss of income to the health care providers would also mean less money in the hands of powerful lobbyists who have managed to influence lawmakers in the past to keep health care as it is.

Less money in the hands of lobbyists would mean less money in the hands of the congressmen who they have influenced.

Congressmen being paid off? Yes.

Let's not be naïve, many in Congress have gotten kickbacks, campaign contributions, gifts and other enticements to vote in favor of the institutions represented by the lobbyists.

They weren't voting in favor of those industries for nothing.

Republicans and the health care industry that they have aligned themselves with are afraid of good old fashioned competition. Having no competition has allowed the industry to run rough shod over the consumer, charging whatever they pleased with no threat of losing patients to competition to throttle them.

Sounds a little like no bid contracts in Iraq and Halliburton doesn't it?

Remember how that turned out? Americans ended up paying millions of taxpayer dollars into inflated contracts in the rebuilding of Iraq.

An alternative, low cost, health care plan is needed to drive health care costs down to the level of sanity.

The Obama health care plan provides a viable and necessary alternative to the present system.

Competition is nothing to be afraid of unless you know it will expose how much you have and are overcharging the American public.

With millions of Americans without any kind of health care coverage the time has come to insure America.

Republicans seem to think that they have plenty of time to "negotiate" with the president but there are over 47 million Americans that don't have time to wait for the Republican Party to stop playing political games.
