Republicans Want to Shut Down the Senate? They're Not Even Trying!

Here Are a Few Suggestions, If They Truly Want to Shut Down the Senate

For the past several months, the Democrats have enjoyed a majority in the United States Senate. The Republicans, led by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, have reacted by opposing almost every single Democratic initiative or appointment by the abuse of procedure, including but not limited to filibuster, to delay or even kill the Democratic measures. The Republicans take great pride in shutting down our Senate. I would argue, however, that they've only scratched the surface. Sure, they have created a Senate that accomplishes very little. However, I think a lot more could be done to shut down the Senate as a legislative body.
  1. Stop using procedural filibusters. Where's the drama? We never get to see the "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" style of filibuster. The Senate relies on rules and agreements that formalize the old filibuster. So instead of bringing cots into the chamber, and running marathon sessions, they use procedures like "cloture votes" to stop legislation. That's no fun. I say if the Republicans are bent on filibustering, they should have to stay in the chamber, and debate. When they're done debating, they can vote. If they want to filibuster everything, they should be prepared to be there for a while.
  2. Cut out the perks: If you really want to undermine the Senate, why not cut out all of the things that make the job desirable? We've all heard about the sweet health insurance plans they have. Eliminate them. Let the Senators go out and get their own health insurance. Cut out their pension, too. Why do all Senators need their own office? Double them up! They have their own health club and dining room. Why? Let them mingle with the rabble. Take away their private barber shops and capital hill banks. And... dare I say it? Cut their salary!
  3. No more holidays! No, you can't go home. Stay where you are, and stay miserable. Have votes at 2 a.m. Have votes on Sundays. Mix it up a little, just to make life in the Senate miserable.I'm sure a clever Senator can think of a million ways to throw a spanner in the works.

Seriously, though, if the minority in the Senate feels it is wise to bring the Senate to a grinding halt, then I don't know why they should enjoy getting perks and salaries for producing nothing. I don't know why they should get paid six figures for a light work week. I don't know why they need a "vacation" from work that they're not doing anyway. Maybe if you start fooling with their salaries and perks, they might get the message. It may be a bitter pill for the Democrats to swallow, but I think a little retaliation is in order.
