Repurpose Old Windows

New Uses for Old Windows

Catherine Spencer
Repurposed old windows can add a unique architectural element to any room in your home. I have two repurposed old windows in my home that have different uses that I would like to tell you about. Both of these old windows were found on the side of the road in junk piles!

One of my repurposed old windows is in our spare bedroom. This old window has a realistic pine bough garland with pinecones attached to it. I have an acorn wreath hanging from the top as adornment. The main purpose of this old window is as a focal point in the room. The second purpose is to display antique postcards from our town in Michigan. I just put Tacky on them and stick them up on the glass.

The second repurposed old window in our home is used to display my jewelry. It is a very useful, interesting way to use an old window.

To make this, first take the glass out of your old window and clean up the old caulking that may be left. Cut a piece of scrap wood to fit across the bottom of the old window to use as a shelf. Just cut the wood to fit, round the edges, attach to the window with screws from behind. This is a good place to set rings, pins, and odd pieces of jewelry that can't be hung up.

Sand the window and paint with your color of choice. I used an ivory acrylic paint for the first coat of paint. Then I watered down a plum shade of acrylic paint and applied it to the window. When it was dry, I antiqued the old window with an antiquing medium to give it an aged look.

Now it's time to add cup hooks so you can hang up your necklaces, bracelets, and odd pieces of jewelry. I used antiqued brass cup hooks, screwing them into the old window where I thought they would work best. This is a great place to keep your necklaces so they won't get tangled.

For your earrings, cut a piece of plastic mesh the size of a window pane opening. Attach to the old window by stapling. Hook back earrings can easily be hung on the mesh.

I found an old door on a junk pile at the side of the road and took off the door knob and plate. This door knob was attached to the window and adds another bit of character to my jewelry holder.

Guests always notice and enjoy these repurposed old windows. They are inexpensive (practically free) and easy to make. Have fun with your imagination and create a useful item from a repurposed old window!

I like to reuse old windows, too. They have such character, don't they? Also, the squares of glass are just perfect for adding interest to a room. I've even seen the panes of glass replaced by mirrors, adding a nice touch to a small space :)
