Rescind Health Insurance for Congress!

Make Them Pay for Their Own Health Insurance and Get Their Bill Off Our Backs!

Melanie Thomas
With all the mud-slinging being thrown around, and election day less than a week away, I'd like to propose an idea that may separate the men (or women) from the boys (or girls). Instead of the American taxpayer sholdering the burden of health insurance for all members of our Legislature, why don't we put the onus on their backs? Let's find out who really wants to be a 'public servant' at their own expense! No more fat expense accounts, free health insurance, or pensions. A living wage, yes, but the other perks should be done away with, permanently.

Without lifetime pensions and healthcare, how many of our leaders would aspire to a career in politics? When our Constitution was drafted by the Founding Fathers, they never anticipated professional politicians, only public servants who would volunteer time to their country because that was the honorable and right thing to do...

Honorable? When has anyone in the last twenty five years associated the word honor with a politician (or lawyer, but that's another article). It's time the American public stood up and said no more! With over 40 million of us without health insurance, the Medicare and Medicaid systems going broke, and over 60% of hard working Americans functioning without the golden parachute called a pension, it's time we yanked the parachute out from under our leaders!

Has there ever been a study showing what these perks cost the American people? Has the press ever made it a headline to tell us how much Congress actually costs the taxpayers in terms of healthcare, pensions, expense accounts, limosines, etc. No, but Congress has voted to study the mating habits of the tse tse fly, and other inane, ridiculous things. Let's get back to basic, common sense America!

I say no more free healthcare for the rich. No more fully vested pensions after two terms (just eight years). No more fat expense accounts. We're done. Pull the strings on this parachute and let's see who's left standing next week after the election. Then, and only then, will we find out who really wants to 'serve their country' rather than being served!

George Washington almost went bankrupt while serving as our first General and Commander in Chief. He believed in the true meaning of 'public service.'

I say just overturn the law that mandates hospitals cannot turn away patient regardless of their ability to pay. Then we shall see how many of those selfish people oppose the mandate in the name of freedom.

I agree with all but Bob, my premiums each month is $1,346 and thats for senior advantage with medicare. I would like to pay $300 or $400 each month for my family, where can I sign up. And yes we have pre existing conditions, will that hold me back Where is the petition for our congressperson, so that they can pay the same as me. Also, being self employed, I would like to pay 6.3% into my SSA rather than the 15.3% they charge. So who is really getting stomped on-our poor poor congressperson-boohoo sniff sniff

Let me remind all of you who think congress pays for health care, no we pay for their HC. all 100% of it and all other perks. Their pay and raises are paid for by US. the money they receive comes from US. Every time they buy something we pay for it. Your money is being used, not theirs from some outside bank account before they became a federal employee.

I am a current US Government Federal employee. My gross wages are $50,000 a year after 26 years of service. I have the same Federal Employee health benefit plan as every other federal employee, including Congress. The government pays 2/3rd's of my health care costs as part of my benefits, and pay the same amount towards a Congressmen's health package. For upcoming year 2010, the total cost for my FEHB family health plan with CIGNA is $14,361.00 a year. The Government share is $9,777.00. I pay $382.00 a month from my gross pay for a total of $4,584 a year. My health plan has high deductibles and co-pays. Prescriptions are $12.00 generic, and $55.00 for brand name. Same as what a Congressperson from my State would pay for the same plan. This does not include vison care or dental care with is adddtional and would be paid only by myself. Not like the General Motors health care "Cadillac" plan that GM pays full health care costs for the employee. No deductibles, generic drugs ar

Mr. Wyden from Oregon pays $360 per month for full coverage health insurance for his entire family the taxpayers pay about $10,000 per year for his health care. Multiply that by 535 members of congress and 20 staff people per member, and it looks like the taxpayers pay about $100 million dollars a year for their health care. Time for change again, vote against whoever your incumbant is, democrat or republican in 10 months.

Public Option idea. Take the average yearly premium of Congress as the most one would pay. Anyone participating in the public option would agree to sign a release, giving up all rights to sue anyone in their health care world i.e. Doctors, hospitals, Ins. Co. The only losers would be the lawyers.

Son, I'm ashamed of you. I didn't raise a right-wing ninny of a son. Where are your morals for the good of man. That's right, all men, and women and children should be the focus of our cares, not fighting labor unions that are supposed to look out for the good of man as well. If their's a hand in the till then it's every man's hand...including your own. Now go to your room! - Mom
