Researcher Says Cell Phone Users May Be Able to Protect Themselves from Negative Affects of EMFs

We are surrounded by electromagnetic fields (EMFs), and many scientists and lay people have been concerned for years about the potentially negative effects EMFs may be having on the human body.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) describes electromagnetic fields (EMFs) as invisible lines of force produced by electrical current. Virtually everyone is exposed to EMFs every day, but NIOSH says scientists are most concerned with magnetic fields with frequencies near 60 Hz. High magnetic fields are found near everything from power saws and drills, to electric motors and generators, to copy machines and electric pencil sharpeners. The strength of the magnetic field depends on the design of the equipment and the current flow, not on equipment size, complexity, or voltage.

Demesne, an informational website that collects and disseminates information on numerous topics, says that magnetic fields exist only when the electricity is flowing through appliances or equipment, but electric fields are always present wherever there is wiring. Further, Demesne identifies more modern equipment and appliances, including cell phones, microwaves, computers, electric razors, hair dryers and entertainment equipment, as being items people should be most concerned about.

Both the NIOSH and Demesne say there have been a number of studies on the effects of EMFs, but not enough evidence to conclusively say exactly what EMFs do to the body. Because of the uncertainty, the U.S. government has not set limits for worker exposure to EMFs, but some private organizations have developed some guidelines because there is a significant consensus that there may be cause for concern. Nonetheless, the government is continuing to study EMFs, and NIOSH says that concerned workers and employers might consider some measures for reducing EMF exposure.

In its Sept. 11 press release, The Essence of Healing company reported that, at the request of Deborah Stuart of the Oxygen Research Institute, a LLC in Stinson Beach, Calif., research was done to determine the efficacy of an 18-Karat gold plated pendant in protecting the wearer's DNA from the negative effects of cell phone use. The study was done by Dr. Glen Rein.

According to the bizspirit.com website, Dr. Rein has worked for some 25 years in biomedical research at Harvard and Stanford Medical Schools, where he studied neuroscience, immunology, psychoneuroimmunology and bioelectromagnetics. He founded the Quantum Biology Research Laboratory in 1988, where he's focused his research on characterizing new forms of non-electromagnetic energy by virtue of their effects on biological systems and water. Of current research, Dr. Rein has said that "EM fields from cell phones was shown to have a statistically significant detrimental effect on DNA," and according to the press release, he concluded from his research that the gold plated pendant "protects the wearers DNA from the harmful affects of cell-phone use." The specifics of Dr. Rein's research are not presented.

In response to Dr. Rein's findings, Stuart said: "This is very exciting news, as an addition to our own research - we now have empirical evidence to support the fact that our technology does protect from the harmful affects of negative EMF's." Stuart's findings have come from research consisting of subjective client testimonies.
