Researching as a Freelance Writer

Saving Time on the Internet

The devil lies in the Internet. Any freelance writer would agree that this phase is not far from the truth.

The most difficult aspect of creating a successful freelance career is not what one would commonly think - getting clients who are ready to pay for your work. That may be relatively easy in comparison to a more difficult aspect. That is on time delivery of your writing. When clients give you work they expect you to deliver on time. They expect that you will finish the work within the stipulated time that you have told them. Under such circumstances if you fail to complete your work on time you will be a big looser. Clients will soon stop believing you and you will be left in a lurch. They will start leaving you soon. How does one manage to avoid this pit fall.

This article seeks to keep it simple. We discuss one of the very basic things which can help you get your work done on time. What are proposed in this article are some very basic tips to ensure productivity and timely delivery of you writing assignments on time.

There are umpteen articles on the Internet and otherwise that speak of how to manage your time and productivity. Many of the writers of these articles have spoken from their experience how we can improve upon our productivity.

Differing from most of the writers, I would argue that time management is primarily a personality attribute - an attribute which you can build by adopting a consistent and focused effort. If you wish to succeed as a freelance writer, this is an attribute which you will need for a rest of your freelance career for building up a timely delivery mechanism.

Most freelance writers agree that the biggest time waster in the life of a freelance writer is the very source of his or her work i.e. the Internet. The Internet provides us work but there is an evil side to it. It can be a very bad medium to pilferage your time. You will continue to feel that you are being productive when you are on the Internet and by close of day realize that you didn't achieve anything at all. When we log on we could be either surfing the net for jobs or doing some research writing. We may be online on one of those messenger application that seem to be harmlessly sitting minimized to our taskbar or an brightly lit icon nested next to the PC's clock. Knowingly or unknowingly these turn out to be our worst time wasters in a freelance career.

It is therefore extremely important that you clock your online time. How much time do you actually spend on the Internet - chatting or simply surfing the World Wide Web for jobs or for anything.

Ask yourself, why you are going in: Before you go on to the Internet remember that it is a big bad world out there. What you make of it will decide your success or failure as a freelance writer. It is therefore important that before you go on to the Internet you must decide what you want to actually make of it. The Internet is very much like a treasure hunt. Before you log in onto the Internet you must decide what you are going in for. You pick the treasures that you are looking out for pick them out and get out of there. You always have the liberty to re-enter whenever you want to look for more treasures.

Clock your time: You must have a proper estimate of the time that you spend in the World Wide Web. Keep a track of your time. Say if you are going in to search for some information; just search for it. Find it and when you have it get out and mark up your time. This practice will help you in two counts. Firstly, it will help to ensure that you do not waste any time and secondly it will ensure that you keep a proper record of the time within which you were successful to get information. Some clients may also want to know how much hours you have spent for them, they may also want to know the sources from where you have generated the information. A practice of' marking up your time will definitely be a great help in the case of these clients.

Don't keep digging: The general tendency is to keep searching for information - keep digging in the hope that you will get something better. It is therefore important that you know what you are looking out for. You may not get exactly that, but even if you get some information it is always better to come out of your 'search' mode and spend time reading and evaluating what further information you may need.

Adopt a few simple tips and you will find that you are getting more productive with your time on the Internet which indeed is the best and most important tool for you as a freelance writer.
