Researching Made Easy for Papers, Reports, or Stories

Erin Crouse
Papers, everyone has had to type one at one point in time and it drives us crazy. You know what I'm talking about, essays or something close to essays. Yes, the arch nemesis of all lazy or procrastinating people, the essay is one way teachers or others rate your knowledge of a subject. Essays also rate how well your knowledge of writing improves or just plain sucks. But to have a good essay you have to know what you want. And the way to do that? Research!

Yes research, the super hero of all that deals with writing. Research helps you with all that information you need to find on the subject you're going to talk about. So let us take a moment to look at what research can help you with and how to accomplish a successful research study.

Of course to do research you must have a topic first. Whatever your topic it must be narrow. Nothing wide like America or animals, it'll give you nothing but a headache when searching because there is so much information. Narrow your fields down to the bare minimum. Think of something like, betta fish, or Siamese fighting fish. That's the sorta narrowed topic you want.

Begin your search first in books. Books will take you a while to go through so starting with them is logical. Many books have only a chapter or two on your subject so look for those first. There are some books out there too that only follow through with your basic interest. Look for them and skim through them for tidbits of information. I repeat you don't have to read the bloody thing you just have to skim through and pick out what's useful.

Another source for research is the internet. Now, the internet is a difficult research tool to use because there is the good information and then there is the stuff out there that isn't even worth blowing your nose on. I wouldn't recommend blowing your nose on it anyway. It might be messy if you blew your nose on the screen and on a printed paper.

Anyway, try to look for sites that have a good base behind them. If they are recognizable and have been credited for good information then go for it. But like I said you have to be careful, there are as many bad sites as there are good and many bad sites can fool you into thinking they're good for information. You also have to keep an eye out for severely biased sites. Those sites can screw with all the information you've gathered.

For all the information you find in either books or on the internet you have to weed through what you can and can't use. It'll take a while but can be done. Make sure everything goes in order and makes sense. Trust me, I've had a paper or two make no sense because I've had no order or structure.

Try and follow these suggestions if you can. You don't have to follow them exactly of course. You can even use these tips for other writings such as books or whatnot. I have used research on a book I am writing and it has been very helpful. Hopefully it will be helpful to you too. Good writing!
