Reselling Baby and Children Items

Laura Ward
Reselling baby and children items has become a popular trend. With children's consignment stores, church consignment sales and internet sites such as ebay and craigslist, selling gently used items is very easy and worthwhile. Because babies and kids do not generally wear the same size clothes for a long period of time, their clothes tend to stay in like-new condition if taken care of properly. Same goes for furniture, equipment and toys. Rather than packing your baby's items up in bag and toting to the local thrift store, try to resell your items to make some cash for new items.

First of all, consider where you are going to resell your items. Will you be taking your items to a local consignment store for them to go through and choose what they wish to purchase or sell for you? Consignment stores usually allow consignors to sell their items in the store for free. The store usually sets the prices on the items. When an item sells, the consignor gets a portion of the profit and so does the store. Some consignment stores will buy the items out right and give you cash or a check on the spot. Will you label your items with your asking price and sell them in a church consigment sale? Most of these sales occur twice a year. The consignor keeps a portion of the profit and the church will get a portion of the proft. Do you prefer to pay a small listing and purchase fee to sell the items on ebay? Shoppers from all over the world can shop on ebay and bid for your items. When your stuff sells, you collect the money and ship the items to the purchaser. You might consider listing your items on your local craigslist. The posting is free and the purchaser will usually pick up the items from you instead of having them shipped. If you have alot of items that you want to sell at once, you might choose to have a yard or garage sale. Having a yard sale is alot of work, but allows you sell many items at once. You set the price and can negotiate with shoppers as they wish to find bargains.

If you are planning to resell your child's clothing, you should make sure that the clothing is in good condition. Go through the clothing thoroughly and take out any items that are discolored, stained, ripped, torn, missing zippers/buttons or look tattered. If you would not want to purchase an item because of the condition it is in, set is aside in the donation pile. To get the most amount of resell value, clothing should be freshly laundered and free of wrinkles. You might choose to sell clothing by the piece or in lots grouped by size or season. Shoes can be resold also as long as they are still in good, quality wearing condition. Most people do not feel comfortable purchasing second hand underwear, but socks, tights and pajamas are often resold.

Children's furniture and equipment is easy to resell. Because nursery and bedroom furniture is so expensive in retail stores, buyers are happy to find a deal on second hand items. If the furniture or equipment is in excellent shape and has not been recalled, you are probably able to sell the items for about three quarters of the retail amount. If the items are in good shape, asking half of the suggested retail price is usually fair. If your furniture or equipment is in fair shape, you can usually expect to receive about one quarter of the retail amount. Research your items and see what others are selling like items for. Make sure that none of the items you are selling have been recalled and never sell anything that is no longer safe.

Toys are also easy to resell. However, do not expect to get as much off of toys as other items. Make sure that the toys you are selling are in safe condition and cleaned well before you list for sale. It is important that all of the pieces are sold with the toy and if there are any missing or broken pieces, make sure you state that when trying to sell the item.

Most importantly, be fair and be realistic. If you purchased a swing brand new for $50 ten years ago, you can not expect to sell that same swing for $45 just because it is in good shape. Be aware of what is new on the market and set your prices accordingly. Be fair to yourself and be fair to your purchasers. You do not have to give your items away, but people are looking to purchase things second hand to save money. Refrain from selling items that are unsafe, recalled or worn out.
