Resetting Your Password in OS X

How to Reset Your Password on a Mac

Jason Kohl
Resetting your password in Mac OS X can be done two ways. The first way is the easiest and recommended since you are using your original disk to do it. The second method does not require the disk but will reset your user just like you just installed your OS.

First thing you want to do is to start your Mac with the OS X install disk in the drive. This will start the install process. You will see on the top that is says Utilities. Click on Reset Password and follow the prompts. You are done after this.

You will want to restart your Mac holding down the command (apple key)+S. This will put you in single user mode. You will be presented with a command prompt which you type this in.

#sh /etc/rc

#passwd yourusername

#reboot

And with that your computer will reboot and prompt you to enter all your information again.
