Some Montgomery County offers valuble resources and information on educational facilities in the DC metro area. The Preschool Education Program (PEP) offers a specialized early childhood education program. Maryland has programs for early childhood assessment and another for infants and toddlers. There are also early intervention programs in several counties in the state that will provide family support and resources to help them take care of their child. The Maryland Association of NonPublic EducationFacilities (MANSEF) provides a list of non-public schools that cater to children with special needs. They are listed by county and serve a variety of special needs. The Ivymount School, Oakmont School, Community School of Maryland(catersexclusively to autistic children), and the Frost Center are some that have programs geared towards autistic children. You will need to look for the code (14) to be sure that it is available at the school. To get more information about school bus transportation options for your child visit the School Transportation Newssite.Although there is beginning to be a greater awareness of asperger syndrome/autism, partly due to an increase in diagnosis, the information is somewhat limited and not easily found. Hopefully this information will provide just enough information to send you on your way.

Post a CommentHi! Thank you for posting this information it is very useful for parents. Did you check out the resources available in Cecil County (north western MD)? In 2007 our family moved from Cecil County to NJ to get needed services for our son with Aspergers, after many years of trying and failing to get him the appropriate supports and help he needed in the public school system. Many other families with children with autism also moved away from Cecil County to get supports and accomodations that were not available there. I can only hope that with the passage of time and an increase of funding and autism awareness Cecil County can improve the education and support of kids with Aspergers and autism and their families.
