Memphis is a pretty big city now and there are lots of people looking for part-time work between school or main jobs, and others--particularly students--are looking for work in the summer when their school sessions end. Some of the best resources I found online have been included here.

One place to get part-time work is the University of Memphis through their Federal Work Study program (FWS). You have to be a student at the University to be enrolled for at least 6 hours of course work and be able to demonstrate financial need for this work. The application has to be done before April 1st, so it's too late this year, but certainly worth applying for next year. There's a form to fill out on the web site. Work can be up to 7.5 hours a day, 37.5 hours a week and students will be placed in departmental work that matches their qualifications. This is a superb way to begin building a resume for future careers after graduation.

Many people can do work right from their home from anywhere. In fact I do this myself to supplement my small income This work is for people who have decent writing skills, but they don't have to be writers, by any means. There are no quotas or content restrictions. People simply write short articles on subjects that interest them using their personal knowledge, plus google and other online research tools. Articles must be 400 words or more. They accept audio and video submissions as well. Writers submit their articles online and are paid through paypal. This company is a great way for students to earn a few hundred dollars every month or for people who are shut-ins or disabled.

Groovejob is an online site that you register for and get information about part-time or summer jobs. Their listings sometimes are worthless, but the brick and mortar companies, like Home Depot are good bets. Check each job individually and check it out. If there are any phone numbers, call and talk to someone personally. It's always worth checking out everything you can.

Jobs.net is a good online search resource for people looking for jobs in a specific area. Right now there are a whole lot of jobs in Memphis and the area ranging from security jobs, marketing, over-the-road drivers, bookkeepers, clerks

These are just some resources that people can start with. Needless to say, the newspapers always have some job listings. However, my suggestion is to begin looking in the Memphis Flyer and little weeklies like the East Memphis Shopper's News to get a wider range. Another strategy to use is to advertise yourself. If you have some skills or talents that you think people may want, put a short ad in one of these publications and make it brief to economize. This is not effective if you have no special skills, however. For those students looking just for summer work and who are in good shape, look for landscaping or painting companies and give them a call. They can generally use summer supplemental employees. Good luck and good hunting and property managers. There are so many here.
