There are many resources available for anyone that wants to prepare their own 1040 tax forms. The best sources for information come directly from the I.R.S. itself and when obtaining information through them you can be fairly sure that it is accurate. You can obtain information online or from tax books that are free from the I.R.S. with your forms.

Most local libraries and some post offices will have standard 1040 forms and tax information books available at no charge. Be sure to pick up any copies that you need early as supplies may be limited. You may order forms directly through the IRS, on their website, to be sent in the mail or you may call 1-800-829-3676 to order up to ten different products for mail delivery.

Many local community centers, senior centers and even the IRS themselves offer low or no cost help to those that qualify. You may call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 to get locations for assistance near you. Be sure that any resources you use are reliable. Filling out your form correctly is your responsibility when you do not use a professional preparer.

When you are preparing your own tax forms whether online or on paper take your time and complete all required information correctly. Double check that your name, address and social security number is entered correctly. Double check any information you include for your spouse or dependents. Spend time checking your math. Do not forget to sign your tax form and have your spouse sign as well if you are married filing jointly. Most common errors on 1040 forms come from simple math mistakes and the failure to sign the completed form.
