Respect the Dr. Martin Luther King Day

Mr. Chip's
Dear Editor: The Reverend Martin King Jr. holiday is a paid legal by law holiday. It is one of the few legal holidays that our country recognizes. The other holidays are Columbus day, President Abraham Lincoln and President George Washington's (also known as Presidents Day). This year during a celebration in recognition of the King Holiday. A bomb was discovered during a parade. This is very sad. It took so much to even present the idea of a King Holiday to America.
Historically Dr. King lost his life in 1968 when he was murdered by assassination. In the same year Representative John Conyers, D-Mich.,introduced legislation for a federal holiday to commemorate Dr. King. In 1973 Illinois was the first state to adopt Martin Luther King Day as a state holiday. Then finally in 1983 President Reagan signs the legislation making the King Holiday bill a law. In 1986 the MLK Holiday goes into effect. Unfortunately an out of touch Governor in Arizona named Evan Mecham rescinds the King Day holiday. In 1989 44 states adopted MLK Day in an official capacity. Today all of America celebrates and recognizes MLK Day. It would seem to me that the wheels of civil right and human rights should continue to keep moving forward. But there are still those that are still upset that America elected its first African-American President in the history of this world, President Barack Hussein Obama. Elected by all races, all genders, all socio-economic realms and so on. And Dr. King had much to do with the wheels of that progress. One day it will be a woman in the seat of power of all races. But I see that change will come as Dr. King would say. The change will have to prepare for the challenges of those who want to stay upset. Much opposition will be from the confederate and white suprermacist school of thought. I remember reading something from the famous Andy Rooney. To paraphrase he was discussing the fact of seeing a day that a black person could vote for a white person and a white person could vote for a black person without repraisal. And with President Obama we are getting closer to that fact. But maybe I and Mr. Rooney may have figured that people would have been more understanding. But in the short time President Obama has been in office. He has been scrutinized literally from head to toe. What he eats, what he wears, where he visits, his family, his spouse (First Lady Obama). And now the detractors of the MLK holiday. And Black History month has not even arrived. I will continue to celebrate the MLK holiday. And whenever possible will peacefully dissuade others from negative impulses in reference to MLK Day and Black History month. I do not disrespect President's Day but I know that the Father of our country owned slaves and Columbus probably killed some of my native American relatives when he was exploring North America. America is full of mostly good but there are contradictions. I can live with this because many good people like Dr. King gave their life for both.
