Respect in the Workplace

A Key to Success

Gavin Matthews
Respect is essential in the workplace. From the sanitary engineer (janitor) to the CEO, everyone wants to feel respected. People want to feel their lives, their desires, their goals, and their opinions mean something. Therefore the first step in effective communication is to make the other person believe they have your respect.

The Challenge of Showing Respect

Respecting others can be a challenge for some people. Two extremes in personality can prevent someone from naturally respecting others. Either a person can have no respect for themselves hence making it difficult to give that quality to others. Or a person can be narcissistic and have no respect for anyone unless they feel you are extraordinary in some way. If you lean towards either of these two extremes you can have a real battle on your hands.

Respect can also be a test because some people are just hard to revere. Their actions, their speech, and their values can present a hurdle to having a high opinion of them. Maybe they show you no reciprocal respect or maybe they are just plain hard to communicate with. Whatever the case they put a burden on your desire to respect them.

How to Show Respect

A key to overcoming the challenges of showing respect is to view others as superior to you. Humility does not come naturally to most people. The society we live in does not promote a humble attitude. Still it is imperative that you see other people as having some quality or skill that is greater than yours. And the fact is they probably do. If you can find that quality or at least assume it is somewhere to be found then you will have an easier time respecting them.

There is a word of warning. Don't be fake! People sense fake respect and a relationship can quickly disintegrate. When a person attempts to show fake respect it comes across as flattery. Unless the person you are talking to badly craves the attention all you will do is repel people, not attract.

With any relationship in life, whether it be work, family, or friends the very foundation of being successful is respect. Respect that others are human beings with their own set of strengths. Respect that others have something to contribute to the world. Respect that others also love, hate, get happy, get sad, and experience all the same emotions you do. Respect that we are all play a part human society.
