Restaurant Bans Customers Who Do Not Finish Their Food

Lick the Plate Clean or Leave!

Just when I think I have heard or seen it all, this news item pops up in the Australian newspaper, and quoted as said by Chef Yukako Ichikaw who is tired of throwing away food in her restaurant.

She has this warning pasted to the door of his exclusive restaurant, and written on the bottom of the menu as well. The idea is that she wants to stop wasting food, and is only thinking of the environment.

The Chef has incorporated a 30 percent discount for diners who eat all the food that they had ordered and that she has cooked. She owns a 30-seat restaurant in the Sydney suburb of Surry Hills, and describes it as "guilty free Japanese cuisine."

It this sounds a little like what you teach your kids when they do not want to eat any more? It is. The difference is that this chef is threatening to no longer admit those who leave over food to her restaurant again.

Is this the same as when you tell your children to eat or to go to bed without any food? I wonder which threat is worse and which one works. I guess that it depends on the type of guest and the type of parent who rules the house, and the amount of food that is served.

Regardless of what is right or wrong, a paying customer should be allowed to eat as much as they want. They should also be able to eat where they want, and in a case like this, I personally would not even care to return to this restaurant.

Somehow, I think that the Chef misses the point. If she served less food, it would be easier for paying customers to eat less, have less waste and it would be good for the environment without her threatening or scaring away the customers.

Sometimes, I wonder what this world is coming to when a chef who also is the owner of a restaurant threatens and bans customers who do not 'clean their plates'. All she has to do is spend less, buy less, cook less, and serve their paying guests food in smaller plates.

Will wonders never cease?

We have a restaurant near where I live, that serves too much food on the plate. Most of the customers take home food in a baggy and eat it the next day. I would think that this chef would think about this, before banning paying customers, don't you think?

I visited London when I was 18 years old. We ate at a restaurant that had horrible food. I couldn't eat more than a few bites. The chef came out and scolded me by calling me a "wasteful American." Makes me wonder if the chef has relocated to Australia!

It sounds like someone is forgetting who pays her bills.

Sounds to me that she will be losing guests, at least she would here in the United States.

I think that a restaurant that bans customers who do not eat all their food is definitely extreme. I appreciate the article.

Sondra, I agree with yoou on this. Most restaurants serve such large amounts of food, hardly anyone can eat it. I agree with Melanie, it is crazy!

Great job! I agree, this is absolutely crazy. Shouldn't the PAYING customer be allowed to decide how much he or she eats? You also made a great point about the food quantity. Serve smaller portions! For me, a policy like this would turn me off to the restaurant no matter how good the food is. And like another comment said, if I have much food leftover I take it home and save it for later.

Wow. What about the customers that take home a "doggy bag?" I always take home food when I eat out! And I have it for lunch the next day.

I never thought that I'd be reading about something like this. Nice job.
