Stacey Fearnall lost her father to cancer. After learning that a close friend was battling the disease as well, she decided to cut off her long, red hair and donate it to a local fund-raiser for cancer research called Cops for Cancer.
Even though Stacey told her bosses that she intended to cut her hair off and donate it, after shaving her head and returning to work, Stacey was told to go home and not come back. Her boss alleges that she never told him what she intended to do.
Now, being a long-haired lady with a long history of cancer in the family, I have a pretty strong opinion on this one. I thought I would share. First of all, as noted in the news article, "Waitress loses job after shaving head for cancer charity" at http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2008/06/05/shaved-head.html?ref=rss, there are many bald chefs and waiters out there, what happened to them when they decided to cut their hair?
Personally, I think I would be more apt to complain about finding a long hair in my food than I would about my waitress having a shaved head. This may be a reach but I would be willing to bet that Stacey had long, beautiful red hair that 'the guys' loved. I say this because as a blonde with long hair, I get my fair share of attention. Let's face it a lot of men seem to love long hair. So my question is how did it hurt the restaurant when Stacey shaved her head? Did people stop coming to eat there? Did people complain that her hair was short? Or was she just not as much fun to flirt with?
Either way, it seems pretty obvious that this compassionate lady lost her job based solely upon her looks. That's discrimination if I've ever seen it. And please, oh please, let some man try to tell me what to do with my hair! Ladies?
I say cheers to you Stacey for taking such a step to help a good cause like cancer. You are a strong, compassionate, and caring individual and this world could use more Stacey Fearnalls.
