Bravo's
5001 Newport Ave
Ocean Beach
San Diego, CA 92107
Recently I visited this quaint little cantina on a cool spring night. It wasn't the first time I had been there and it certainly will not be the last. The restaurant is located on the corner of Newport Avenue and Bacon Street in downtown Ocean Beach. It is a fantastic location for people watching. The restaurants sports shutters that open so that customers can sit and eat facing outside the restaurant. Although there is no sunset view, the people can be quite entertaining.
Upon entrance of Bravo's the hostess is very pleasant and allows you to sit wherever you like. There is a wide array of choices from bar stools to booths to four top tables and chairs. Chips and salsa are given to customers freely and in abundance. One thing was different about the menu since we are on the topic of chips and salsa. In bold letters, THE FIRST PLATE OF CHIPS AND SALSA IS FREE, SECONDS ARE $1.75. This brought a chuckle because of some people that live in Ocean Beach. I could easily see them coming in, ordering a Pepsi and just eat at the chips and salsa, which are stored toward the front of the restaurant open access, as if it were a salad bar. A few ruin it for the rest of us, isn't it true?
I ordered the Tortilla Soup and listened to fine Mexican music while I waited. A cool breeze flowed through the open shutters. It is a very nice atmosphere, not too crowded. The Tortilla Soup is just amazing. There are huge chunks of chicken and the customer gets his choice of corn or flour tortillas. The tortillas are perfect for dunking into the soup. My taste buds were dancing and my heart was skipping a beat. The chicken was very fresh and tender. The soup was the perfect temperature. The portions are huge. I would not be able to say too many good things about this fabulous new addition to the downtown Ocean Beach scene.
I was equally impressed when the bill came. Yes you can get two bowls of tortilla soup, a couple of Pepsis and chips and salsa for under 20 bucks. Believe it.
Visit Bravo's and tell them I sent you. The will probably curse at you in Espanol but its okay the food is worth it.
