Restaurant Review: Cancun Mexican Restaurant in Lake Charles, LA

Cancun Mexican Restaurant
Neighborhood: Lake Charles

My family had some vouchers for food -- so twice the amount of food could be bought for the normal price. For example, a voucher cost $5, but by using it, it would be like getting $10 worth of food. In a way it is like getting half off $10 of food. Anyway, we had them for a restaurant called Cancun. My mom and I went first and Briana joined us the third and fourth times we went.

Promise:

This restaurant is not well advertised, so not many people actually hear about it unless they know of it or know people that eat there or work there. The promises are found on the menu. The first one says, "Best margarita in town." The second one says, "Authentic Mexican Food."

Setting:

The setting in Cancun is not comfortable. It is always dark in the restaurant. There are some booths along the walls and then there are tables in the middle of the restaurant. They can never keep the restaurant at a comfortable temperature.

Service:

The service there is terrible. Only one time when my mom and I went alone at night was there a good waitress. At this time, I was able to get a cheese quesadilla with steak. I had asked for beef, but that was only because it was what was on the menu. I asked for no vegetables, and the waitress knew what I wanted.

The next time I asked for this, the waitress insisted that it could not be served without vegetables. However, they serve plain cheese quesadillas and they also serve "nacho meat" which can be beef, chicken, or both and it does not have vegetables. This means that it could easily be put on a cheese quesadilla, but the waitress insisted it could not be done.

The next time I wanted to have huevos rancheros, but with scrambled eggs because this is what my sister ordered the last time and she got it. However, at that time, they served the eggs somewhere between over easy and over medium. I don't like egg yolks not mixed with egg white and don't care for the flavor of eggs cooked that way. When we asked for them to fix the scrambled eggs, they gave it back and all they had done was chop up the eggs that they had cooked, refusing to fix their error.

The staff made many other errors and they refused to fix them.

My mom asked to talk to the manager who said, "I'm not going to recook them" when we asked for the scrambled eggs to be fixed again. She never fixed them and my mom bought me a side of scrambled eggs.

Also, the last two times, the waitresses were extremely slow in seating us, taking our orders, bringing our drinks, and serving us.

Menu:

The menu does have the "classic Mexican" dishes, so if those are wanted, they can be found. However, this does not mean that the staff knows how to prepare the dishes. Also, it does not allow for variety. The meals are what they say and there are no special orders (not even a simple "leave this sauce off or serve it on the side"), so the place is not good for children, people with food sensitivities, or people with food allergies.

Food:

With the food sounding like Mexican food, it would seem that it would taste good. However, much of it is obviously from packaged foods because they staff had said "it comes that way" or "it is mixed that way."

At a time, the food was the closest to real Mexican food in Lake Charles, LA. However, that's thankfully no longer true.

Price:

Most dishes cost between $8 and $15. A few of the a la carte items are $1-$5 and lunch specials cost $5-$8. Visiting the restaurant at a time other than lunch and getting meals makes the bill expensive.

Is it worth it?

Visiting Cancun is not worth the time or money. The waitresses are inept. The food is not good. The restaurant is uncomfortable. If you are still interested in the restaurant after reading this review, a menu can be found at Urban Spoon.

It's probably a good thing that this is not well advertised!! lol

What a terrible experience! I wish Gordon Ramsey would walk in there, kick some fannies and take numbers. Reading what you said about the manager more or less explains the staff. They probably fired the good waitress because she made them look bad. I hope you reported them to the chamber of commerce.
