On a recent trip to the Mall Of Georgia with the kids, we discovered a new restaurant that had just opened. It is in a prime location right beside one of the main entrance's, but is occupying a spot that has seen numerous restaurants come and go in the past few years. Given the track record of previous eateries in that spot, it seems that it may be an uphill struggle for any new tenant, so let's take a look and see what I think their chances are.
Our visit started off well as we were very pleasantly greeted and escorted to a table immediately. The first thing that strikes you about the interior is the throwback look it has to an old style 50's diner, neon lighting and bright colors abound, but the senses are somewhat confused as cheesy 70's disco music is piped into the restaurant. Everything is spotlessly clean, as you would hope with a new establishment, and there seemed to be more staff, almost all of whom were occupied with a bottle of Windex and a dust cloth, than customers.
The whole thing struck me as a little odd and it only got odder as I perused the menu. They serve everything from all day breakfast, to burgers, to quesadillas and seemingly every other food group in between. We placed our drink orders as we tried to decide and were then forced to wait fully 20 minutes as the waitress seemed to have some serious trouble making ice cream floats for the kids.
We finally placed our food orders, my son and I opting for a breakfast skillet meal called "The Heap", and my daughter going with a black bean burrito. A dining experience that seemed to be going down the drain very quickly was revived when our meals arrived. Our skillets consisted of a bed of seasoned potatoes toped with bacon, cheddar jack, and scrambled eggs, with green peppers and onion thrown in for good measure and it was absolutely delicious (it may actually be the best scrambled eggs I have ever tasted), and we both struggled to eat it all. The black bean burrito was also huge, not to mention delicious, and was big enough that even the hardiest of adults would have had a hard time finishing it.
There is also a very large dessert menu (the cakes on display are also huge and look very tempting), but we were so full that we couldn't even think of sampling any of them. The prices are very reasonable with everything falling in the $6 - $8 range, and I would be prepared to excuse some of the earlier mishaps as teething troubles given that they had only been open for 2 days.
With all that being said, if you are in the Mall Of Georgia and looking for a bite to eat, you could do a lot worse than Crescent Moon. Hopefully they will be able to pull it together and find a clientele that will keep them around for a while, their food deserves that chance.
