Restaurant Review: Dairy Queen in Appomattox, VA

Angelie MacKenzie
About three weeks ago, my mom went to Dairy Queen to get me a foot long chili cheese hot dog and a cheesecake quake blizzard. The ice cream treat was fine. But, the hot dog was covered in cole slaw. Scrapping off the slaw took with it most of the chili. And there wasn't any cheese either. Then, I noticed that the hot dog wasn't the usual color that they used to be and it was cold. It tasted horrible.

The next day I called Dairy Queen and spoke with a manager. She told me that the night my mom had gone there that they were training new people and had only had two people working. She said that was no excuse for poor customer service and took my name and address for the owner to contact me. She went on to say that the hot dogs were a different color because they were using a different hot dog vendor. She admitted that she was trying to get the owner to go back to the previous vendor.

The owner mailed me a gift certificate for a foot long hot dog and some coupons. The coupons, however, ran out of date a week before I received them. I e-mailed the owner (he had included his business card with the gift certificate and coupons) and I told him that they were out of date. He said that they were still good.

When I e-mailed to ask how long that they were good for, he never replied. I haven't used the coupons because, well, who wants to argue with an employee at a restaurant that the owner had said that the coupons was still good?

I'll admit that the owner and the manager did try to make up for my bad experience at the Dairy Queen in Appomattox, VA. However, since I don't feel comfortable with trying to use expired coupons, I'd say that they failed in making this right.

This was the first time in almost two years that I've eaten something other than ice cream at this Dairy Queen location. Any time I go there for ice cream, I never have any problems. It's when I go there for food that I'm left disappointed. The time before this that I went there for food, I got the chicken strip basket. The chicken strips were so hard, that I actually cracked a tooth. It wasn't a big deal because that tooth had to get a crown done anyway. But the point is, those chicken strips were rock hard. Not to mention their French fries are always cold.

I recommend this Dairy Queen for ice cream only. If you're hungry, do yourself a favor and eat somewhere else and then go there for dessert.

My family has been ordering from the lunch menu for about 25 years. We are especially partial to their hamburgers and hotdogs. Our real favorites are the chocolate milk shakes (I like the regular shakes but my husband loves the chocolate malts). We travel to southwest Virginia often and stop at this Dairy Queen every trip.
