Restaurant Review: Gelsosomo's Pizzeria in Valparaiso, Indiana

Have a craving for pizza in Valparaiso, Indiana? Today's review brings us to Gelsosomo's Pizzeria, located on 2605 Laporte Avenue. The restaurant is located on the corner and has plenty of parking. The establishment is large and has tables or big comfy boothes. No real italian theme just a basic restaurant decor and colors. The hostess and waiteress had no uniforms or any uniformed attire. The hostess had mini shorts, a top, and flip flops. This is too casual for even a first date. Maybe for a lunch date or hanging out with a few friends.

Diners: Zsa Zsa and Chet

I have had a few pizzas from this establishment and they have been good. I've eaten the sausage pizza, pepperoni pizza, and a vegetarian pizza. I never had the cheese pizza, today was the day I had to get the cheese pizza. Unfortunetly, the pizza I just had is not up to par. This is after I convinced Chet to dine with me and not go to another pizzeria twenty minutes away. That review is next on my list.

The sausage pizza was good. The sausage is eighty percent lean meat which is great because I do not like the cap of grease on top of my pizza. Sometime there is so much you have to get a napkin to soak up the grease before you can have a bit. There is plenty of sausage, nice round chunks. They are not skimpy on the sausage. The tomato sauce is nothing special, just tomato sauce which is nice and not overpowering. We ordered the large fifteen inch, had nice large slices. Two slices filled me up.

The pepperoni was also good. Had large amounts of pepperoni and enough cheese to compliment the taste of the tomato sauce. There was just enough spices and the taste was nicely balanced. The vegaterian was better than the sausage or pepperoni. It was packed with fresh vegetables and none of the veggies were burnt. The veggies were cooked yet had a nice crispiness. There was an equal amount of vegetables like tomato, green peppers, onions and mushrooms.

Okay, now for the cheese pizza. Chet and I both wanted a cheese pizza. We decided to get the medium thirteen inch pizza which has about sixteen square slices. When the pizza arrived we noticed that the top was like a dark mustard color. I was a little surprised since mozzarella has a nice white color even when melted. We took our first bit and discovered that the dark mustard color layer was actually a layer of parmesan cheese. The parmesan was so strong it took the flavor from the mozzerella and you couldn't even taste the tomato sauce. The pizza tasted like melted parmesan cheese. The crust on this pizza was to buttery. It tasted more like a pastry pie than a crust. We went home very disappointed and will not be ordering the cheese pizza again.

The rating: Out of "Must Bite"(Excellent), "Bite this"(must try), "Take a Bite"(hit or miss), "little bites"(go at your own risk), and "This bites"(sucks)....we give Gelsosomo's Pizzeria a "Take a Bite" overall rating.
