Restaurant Review: Golden Spoon Frozen Yogurt

Janet Trieschman
Golden Spoon is a frozen yogurt franchise located in strip malls with locations in Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah and Japan. There are 85 stores with plans to expand to 120 by the end of 2008. Most of these are located in California. They have out lasted many of their competitors by offering a truly unique product within the frozen yogurt realm. According to their website, they were around from the very beginnings of the frozen yogurt craze in 1982 but they have outlasted the craze and become a viable long-term niche product.

Golden Spoon offers a variety of flavors. They always offer Old Fashioned Vanilla, Chocolate, Peanut Butter/Peanut Butter Cup and Berry. Then they offer a variety of flavors that vary each month, usually seven to eight additional flavors. The flavors are good, definitely not weak and better than I have ever tasted in a frozen yogurt product. And they don't leave a bitter yogurt after taste as many frozen yogurts do. If you aren't sure, you can always ask for a taste to help you decide. Sizes vary by cone and dish but honestly a regular is more than enough to leave you feeling satisfied. They offer to mix flavors by traditional swirling or just placing two flavors side by side in the dish. Then comes the plethora of toppings from crunchy to candy to sauces. Beware the full caloric toppings can add a lot of calories as well as adding to the price.

The calories are the magic of the frozen treat. With twenty-two calories a fluid ounce, an average serving is only eighty-eight calories. There is no measurable fat in their product and it is made from an active yogurt culture. The Frozen Yogurt is smooth, similar to a soft serve ice cream but a bit denser to satisfy the true ice cream craving. The benefits of Golden Spoon are that the yogurt is low in calories and fat, high in calcium and protein and it aids in digestion. A treat that is ready to eat for anyone trying to eat healthier. It definitely satisfies an ice cream craving. Sounds great for something that tastes so good, you don't have to feel the guilt.

What a find! I am only sorry there aren't more locations of Golden Spoon across America. I am not sure I can wait until our next visit to California! Golden Spoon will definitely be on our list of must visit places!
