Restaurant Review of Huddle House in Appomattox, Virginia

Huddle House has been in this area for a while now, but I never went there since all I ever heard of their menu was breakfast items, hamburgers, and chicken strips. After all, those can be made at home or bought for a cheaper price elsewhere. But then a friend of mine said, while it is very seldom, he does eat there and that the place did have a little variety.

My mom and I decided to eat at Huddle House in Appomattox one day out of boredom. Upon entering, there was no way to know what to do. Seat yourself? Wait? Order at the counter? When no one moved to approach us, I went over and told the lady at the counter that we had never been there before. She informed me to sit anywhere and a waitress would take our order.

The menu was not as limited as I had expected. The list of vegetables varied depending on the day of the week. This is probably nice for people who eat there on a regular basis.

My mom and I both ordered the country fried steak with white gravy. However, my mom got hash browns and okra, while I ordered a baked potatoes and sliced tomatoes. My mom asked for extra gravy and I requested extra sour cream.

I was shocked when I saw the waitress cook my baked potato in the microwave. After removing it from the microwave, she wrapped it in foil before adding it to the rest of my order. When she brought the food to the table, she did not bring the extra gravy for my mom and my extra sour cream. So we asked for these items again.

We were almost finished eating by the time the waitress brought the extra gravy and the little extra packet of sour cream. We deliberately ate slowly to wait for what we had asked for, resulting in lukewarm food.

There was no excuse for the waitress not giving us what we requested the first time since she wrote down the order. Neither was there a reason for the slowness in bringing those items since the place was not busy. In fact, I believe there were people at only four tables. Considering Huddle House never seems to have many cars in the parking lot, one would think they would have shown their new customers some appreciation.

I do recommend Huddle House for those looking for a good meal at a cheap price. It was only $7 per meal. We both recommend the country fried steak. I normally do not eat things like that, but their white gravy is really good. It is also nice to eat at a place that has simple side dishes such as tomatoes, okra, beans, squash, etc.
