A coworker told me where La Mia was on Northbound Gratiot just north of Joy Boulevard. So I didn't have any trouble finding it. Otherwise I probably would have passed by it because it sits tucked in a small shopping center.
When I entered the restaurant the first thing I noticed was that the workers did not greet me right away. I was the only person in the restaurant and thought one of the two workers would acknowledge me. My first thought was to leave, but I had a desire for Lebanese food so I stayed and looked over the La Mia menu.
After a couple of minutes woman approach to the cash register to take my order and said hello. I returned the greeting.
As I placed my order I showed her the La Mia coupon I had that was for 50 percent off up to $5.00. She told me that I would have to order two meals to get $5 off. What I ordered, a lamb gyro and bowl of lemon rice soup would have cost about $8. I expected to pay $4. Instead she said I could only get $2 off. We went through a couple other scenarios to see how much I could save. I also switched my order in an effort to save more than $2, but she ended up adding it to my original order which I canceled out. In the end I said I only wanted a sandwich, but she still rang me up for the soup and sandwich combo and rang that total up wrong.
That is the short version of my ordering experience at La Mia. Needless to say I was confused by the time she rang me up so I just paid what she asked for. She didn't give me a receipt, which I didn't like.
I waited about 10 minutes for my order. An older lady handed me my order with a smile and said thank you and I smiled back. That helped smooth over some of the headache I had ordering my lunch.
The first item I tried from La Mia for lunch was the lemon rice soup. It was very tasty with a strong lemon flavor that wasn't too powerful. The soup also had bits of chicken that made it heartier and more filling.
As I ate the soup I tried the lamb gyro. I actually wanted a lamb shawarma sandwich, but La Mia doesn't offer it on the menu. The lamb gyro sandwich had lamb, lettuce, red onion and a white creamy sauce. There was a lot of the white sauce and I ended up removing half of it because I wanted to be able to tastes the other ingredients. The sandwich was okay, but someone bland. No distinct flavor stood out from the meat.
La Mia's prices were average with some $4.50 lunch specials written on a board, while the menu prices were higher in the $7-9 range. The typical dishes are shish kabobs, chicken or beef shawarma, chicken kafta, hummus and tabbouli and soups.
La Mia is open for lunch between 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. You can dine in or carry out. The restaurant is very clean and modern.
I would not recommend anyone dine at La Mia because its customer service needs improving. They should also fully honor the coupons that often bring in new customers. The food is okay, but not memorable. I have eaten at numerous other Lebanese and Mediterranean restaurants and enjoyed
their food. I won't be returning there even if I could fully utilize the coupon.
For those that want to this restaurant out for yourself, La Mia is at 43998 N Gratiot Ave, Clinton Township, MI. The phone number is (586) 463-6078.
