Restaurant Review: Mi Ranchito Restaurant in Sidney, Nebraska

During our road trip from Connecticut to Seattle, my friend and I stopped in Sidney, NE to fill the car with gas and our bellies with food. After surveying our options on the GPS, we didn't really have many exciting restaurant choices. Since we were very hungry and didn't know how many more miles of open road we would encounter before finding another place to eat, we took a much needed rest stop at Mi Ranchito Restaurant. We stopped by the massive Cabela´s across the street to try some cheese curds, but finally decided this little Mexican restaurant was a better choice. It turns out, Mi Ranchito in the quiet farming town of Sidney, NE was exactly what we were looking for.

We ordered two lunches to share: the chicken and bean burrito plate and the taco salad. I was impressed with the taco salad, only because usually Mexican restaurants make the mistake of letting it sit too long. There is really nothing worse than a soggy salad. The meat was cooked well, and the sauce was just spicy enough. I made the mistake of eating too many nacho chips and dip before the meal, so my tongue was on fire from the salsa. The waitress smiled knowingly and offered me unlimited refills of ice cold water. The burrito plate wasn't my favorite, but it was cheap and filled the belly. The portion was huge, and it came with the typical Mexican rice and refried beans. Our entire bill came to under $15 for two lunches and a soft drink.

The waitress was a sweet middle aged Mexican woman, and since we were the only ones in the restaurant, she was especially attentive. I think my only complaint would be that the interior was reminiscent of a fast food restaurant. The colors were bright yellow and orange, which is overwhelming when you first walk in. To be honest, this restaurant was not really anything special. The menu was straightforward, and they offer the standard Mexican fare. For two road trippers who felt like they were in the middle of nowhere, however, Mi Ranchito was diamond in the rough. After a long day of driving through Nebraska, we were craving something other than bland fast food, and Mi Ranchito delivered cheap and plentiful Mexican food.
