Restaurant Review: Old Country Club Steak House in Roxboro, NC

J. Darling
For years I have heard people raving about a restaurant in the Roxboro, North Carolina area often referred to as "Chub Lake" even though the actual name is the Old Country Club Steak House. Due to the fact that the restaurant is a little out of the way and prices said to be a little steep, it wasn't somewhere I was dying to eat at, but when a friend drove me there I decided I had to give it a try and see if it lived up to its reputation.

The Old Country Club Steak House serves charcoal grilled steaks, prime rib, chicken entrees, lobster tails, and seafood dishes in addition to desserts and side items.

From the outside, the restaurant looks like a dive, but I kept my hopes high that perhaps the interior was updated. Walking through the maze to where we were seated at the far end of the establishment, I was disappointed that the interior looked more suited to an old country kitchen. (Yes, I realize that the word "Country" is in the title of the restaurant, but with "Country Club" in the name and the high prices of the menu items you would expect the decor to be a little more modern than what your folksy Great Aunt Estelle might consider charming.) Another comment about the interior: the walls were dingy. Perhaps a fresh coat of paint or a thorough cleaning would help remedy that.

Because I had heard that the steaks were the specialty, I ordered a sirloin, one of the lower priced steaks on the menu. I normally don't consider myself to be a "cheap" person, but looking at the limited choices on the menu and the prices, I couldn't bring myself to order the prime rib. The steak dinner came with a side item (I chose a baked potato) and the salad bar. The salad bar didn't live up to its reputation at all. Some of the items were partially frozen and didn't look quite so fresh. After finishing with our salads, it seemed like forever before our steaks arrived. I also noticed that when we got our meals, the server failed to bring us any bread but the table near us who had arrived after us were munching down on rolls. Our server didn't check back with us as much as she could have (or should have-I spent many years working in food service so I have high expectations for servers), but finally we got some rolls. The butter and sour cream for the potatoes were kept warm in containers in a basket on the table, so I passed on warm, runny sour cream. This made for a dry, tasteless potato. Someone else at the table ordered a baked sweet potato, so perhaps I should have tried one of those instead. As for the steak, it was overdone. I asked for medium and it was gray all the way through and somewhat dry. I chose not to send it back for two reasons: 1. The server didn't come back for awhile to ask if everything was cooked correctly and 2. I didn't want to wait another 25 minutes or longer for another steak.

In conclusion, The Old Country Club Steak House did not live up to its reputation in my book. The service was slow and lackluster, the food overpriced and overcooked, and while I enjoy "atmosphere" I don't enjoy a dirty-feeling atmosphere. I would be willing to give this restaurant another chance, because in all fairness perhaps I was unfortunate enough to dine there on an "off" night. There has to be some reason people love this place, right?

This review is 100% accurate. Have lived in Person County for over a decade. I'll never forget complaining about the restaurants and being told to check out Country Club Streak House! I went with high expectations (and even wore a jacket and tie thinking "Country Club" Holy cow was I in for a surprise. My meal was horrible that night and I have been back many, many times--the same every time--over cooked steaks, lack luster sides, slow service, and really, really high prices.
If you want a good steak in Person County, Warm Waters and Clarksville offer a well cooked steak--but be ready for horrible service.
Personally, when I'm hungry for a good steak, with nice atmosphere and reasonable prices, I find myself driving to Danville or Durham.

Perhaps Country Club Steak House will use these reviews to make some positive changes.

OCC Employee: Not that it has anything to do with building maintainance, but I'm in my early thirties. In my high school and college years I worked nearly a decade in food service. This experience includes nearly every facet of working in a restaurant, from working on the salad bar to serving to line cooking. The fruit wasn't the only thing frozen on the salad bar and there weren't that many tables seated in the restaurant. I stand by my review, I apologize if you're offended. Thanks for reading!

I just want to say that as being an employee of the Old Country Club Steakhouse I take GREAT offense to your post. I would agree with the looks of the building but seeing how some parts are probably older than yourself, you have to understand that time has played a big role with the appearance. As an employee we get fed every night we work. On my few nights off I will go out there to enjoy a small filet cooked medium which is way better than what you ordered. But you would think we would get tired of the food after eating it week after week...not true because if you look at the other two steakhouses in Person County...we got the better end of the deal. The salad bar with some frozen things on it...well we do have "frozen" fruit which again is frozen on purpose. Sorry if you may have had a bad waitress, can't expect but so much when you get busy and I would suggest you visit places a few more times before you go writing bad reviews about them. Don't let one bad experience ruin it

It must have been a rare off night. I dined there last night,1-9-10, as my restaurant of choice for my birthday. It could not have been better. The salad bar was well stocked and fresh and one of the few places left that serves radishes, thank you. I ordered a 9 ounce rib eye medium and it was cooked to perfection. The steak was so tender I hardly needed to use my knife and the flavor was to die for. I had the steamed vegetables for my side and I could not believe how large the serving was nor how well they were prepared. The bread was great! I had coffe to drink and my server kept it full and hot and also attended to the water glasses as she should. My daughter had the fillet and baked potato and loved it. Her boyfriend had what I had and he agreed it was among the best he ever had. I have been coming to Chub Lake for over 30 years and never had a bad experience, from food to service. Also, I have a 70 mile one way drive and it is worth it!
