Restaurant Review: Pepper Pod Restaurant in Newport, KY

The Pepper Pod Restauant in Newport, KY. is a 24 hour diner just blocks away from Newport-On-The-Levee. Located at 703 Monmouth St., it is a casual dining experience in the heart of Cincinnati's entertainment, shopping, and food district. The prices are affordable even in today's economy. Parking is on the street and it offers take-out.

The atmosphere is as charming as Newport itself. It is an old diner with a 1950's feel. There are old jukeboxes on the walls, one for each booth. They no longer work, but who really cares! There is also plenty of space at the large bar if you prefer to eat there. The restaurant offers soul food, including deep fried pickles, steak, and country fried steak. It serves breakfast at all hours. The soundtrack plays one song every so often instead of a steady stream of music and during my dining experience there it ranged from Reggae to Van Halen to Frank Sinatra. It is the kind of place one imagines older men sitting around in, drinking coffee, and shooting the breeze about the good ole days.

I ordered the Spanish omelette with buiscuits and a coke. It came with home made hashbrowns which I chose not to have loaded up. The Spanish omelette was a new taste sensation for me. Who would have thought of filling an omelette with salsa and topping it with more salsa and cheese? Very good, I must say, and light in the stomach despite its size. The buiscuits were a little doughy with flour on the bottom. Since I was in the spirit of trying something new I also had the deep fried pickles. Delicious, though if you have them take an antiacid first!

Restaurant review sites suggest that the Pepper Pod is a great place to go after the bars close, so if you're not inclined to join that crowd, afternoon or early evening dining is good. Then you could even bring the kids! Finishing the day off at Newport-On-The-Levee could make for a refreshing evening out with the family.
