Restaurant Review of Rudy's in Monrovia, California

Monrovia is a quaint little city just 30 minutes east of Los Angeles. Monrovia is known for its small town appeal and turns out to be a city where many people love to raise a family. Monrovia is close to the wonderful city of Pasadena which is about 10-15 minutes west. Monrovia has a great downtown area on Myrtle Street with many art gallery's and restaurants.

Last Friday night I went to a birthday party at Rudy's in Monrovia. Rudy's is a Mexican restaurant with quite the menu choice. The restaurant from the outside looks rather small, but once you walk in its huge and have several different eating areas.

The décor inside and outside is very dated. I am not sure when this restaurant opened up, but from the looks of it, it has probably been around since the 60's! The service was great. We were seated pretty quickly and our waiter came back rather fast to take our order for drinks. About ten minutes later our waiter came back to take our order.

The menu is huge! There were easily fifty different meals to choose from so that was exciting. Some of the offerings were fish tacos, oyster enchiladas, shrimp enchiladas and burritos. There was also ceviche and tostadas. Rudy's had so much more to offer, but those are the items I could list of the top of my head.

The thing that kind of killed my excitement was the price. I was expecting the meals to start around $6.95. To my surprise the least expensive dish started at $9.15! I order chicken flautas. Flautas are just like taquitos except they use corn tortillas instead of flour tortillas. There were only two flautas cut into six pieces with rice and beans! I got and iced tea that cost me over $2. This made me a little upset, but I figured the food here must be really good.

Well, to my dismay the food was not the great. The chicken in the flautas were dry and had very little flavor. I beans were average and the rice was also very dry. I went there starving, but did not even finish my plate because it just was not that good. I even tasted my friend's food and it was not that great either!

So my overall recommendation is to not go there, it's really too expensive for the food not to be that great. The upside is the service is great and fast. Maybe if the food was more reasonably I would say to go there, but I think you could get better food for the money.

I live nearby in pasadena, but grew up in monrovia. Rudy's is ok, but Rigo's, just a mile or so away on foothill and mayflower, is excellent. Cheaper too. Best~Jesse
