First, lets start with the overall atmosphere of the restaurant. As University Chicken, the place was decorated with colors of Blue and Yellow to match the SJSU atmosphere. Now, Smoke Eaters is decorated as a firestation with red painted walls and firey menu. Only the asthetics have changed becasue the same old pool table, tv screens, and video games entertain the guests. It is worth noting that the owners did add a much needed, self-serve, fountain drink machine. This is still the same place that people come to enjoy chicken with their favorite sports games.
The Smoke Eaters menu, excluding some new additions, is also the same old University Chicken menu. Perfect! If they had actually altered the menu items offered I, along with many others, would have been very disappointed. The owners did add some extra snack like foods such as quesadillas but I have not had a chance to try them because the chicken is addicting. After eating the spicy wings or tenders you will crave them in the future along with a nice drink to wash them down. Even if you don't eat the legendary tenders or wings, the chicken sandwiches should be your next thought. Since Smoke Eaters doesn't have an official website that I can find I recommend you look at the menu on the University Chicken website so you can see the wonders that I am writing about.
Other than a few tweaks and asthetic changes Smoke Eaters is still University Chicken (or even Cluck You's) to the college crowd. This is still the place were you can order a Gallon of beer to wash down your food. The staff is still the same cool cats that took your order when it was called University Chicken so they understand it when you order 'atomic' sauce instead of what its called on the Smoke Eaters menu.
Overall, I give the place a 9/10.
Pros:
Awesome food
Same great staff
New soda fountain
Cons:
Don't fix it if its not broke!
