Restaurant Review: Weatherford Downtown Cafe in Weatherford, Texas

Jennifer Claerr
Weatherford is an interesting little historical town, which is only a thirty minute drive from Fort Worth. It is the birthplace of Mary Martin, star of the Broadway Peter Pan musicals and mother of Larry Hagman. Weatherford has also been named the Peach Capital of Texas by the Texas Legislature. The city is the host to First Monday Trade Days, which take place the Friday, Saturday and Sunday prior to the first Monday in each month. You can find great deals on antiques, art, and crafts.

If you visit Weatherford, you'll definitely want to stop in at the Weatherford Downtown Cafe located on 101 W Church St. in Weatherford, Texas. It's a down-home cafe with an informal atmosphere, Texas murals on the walls and a menu full of home-cooking favorites. We visited the place for lunch on a weekday. The place was surprisingly crowded when we arrived, and we had to wait to be seated. To be on the safe side, we grabbed a table before it had been cleared, but the staff was very quick to clear it and wipe it down for us once we had seated ourselves.

As a strict vegetarian I generally have a difficult time ordering in places like this, whose menus tend to center around chicken fried steak and burgers.

The beans and rice entree had bacon in it, so it wasn't an option. They have only one soup per day; the soup that particular day was Tortilla Soup, which was made with chicken, so I was out there, as well. However, I found a veggie plate that offered me some options. I ordered pinto beans, mashed potatoes and baby carrots, and substituted a salad for one of the vegetables. My waiter was very helpful and accommodating, and served me my dressing on the side as requested. I made an exception for my sons, ordering the shrimp plate for both of them. The vegetable of the day was fried squash, which was hot and tasty. We also ordered a grilled cheese, which came made with real cheddar and seasoned battered fries which were so fresh and hot I almost couldn't eat them.

Prices were not at all expensive, and we got out with little more than twenty dollars damage for four people. We were also able to scope out a little bakery outlet store and get a deal on some chips for the ride home. All in all, we had a great time sight-seeing and taking pictures, and had a very productive trip.
