Restaurant Reviews: Kutztown Tavern, of Kutztown, Pennsylvania

An Unassuming, but Great Place to Eat

John Galt
Often, it seems that we pick our favorite restaurants by frequency alone. Instead of going out of the way or trying new things, we stick to the same old formula, not chancing new experiences and thus not finding new and enjoyable restaurants. However, sometimes if we take the time to look for something different, or even to not judge a book by it's cover, we can come away with a great experience and, in the case of a restaurant a very enjoyable meal. Of course while Kutztown, Pennsylvania is home to it's fair share of restaurants and taverns, it can sometimes take a little experimenting to find the best places to eat. Certainly one of the best though, can be found in the Kutztown's tavern.

Located directly on Main Street, the Tavern is one of those places that definitely manages to deceive in appearances. From the outside, it resembles a small bar, one of the many on Main Street, and until one has stepped inside, there is really no way to predict the dining experience that awaits. Walking in, though, reveals a beautiful restaurant, with sparkling clean hardwood floors, a waiting area with several comfortable couches and magazines, and friendly staff waiting to assist you in any way possible. Being that the Tavern is also a microbrewery, it is also interesting to see the various tanks of beer on display, and the entire atmosphere is very unique and very interesting, it is truly unlike anything else in the town.

Whether one chooses to sit in the bar area or the dining room, the atmosphere is always pleasant and the restaurant is always sparkling clean. The staff is incredibly friendly, and even before you order your food, you can be sure that your are going to enjoy your dining experience.

Of course, the food is definitely one of the highlights of the Tavern, and a variety of interesting appetizers help you get your meal started right. Whether one chooses to try the distinctively Americanized egg rolls, nachos, mozzarella sticks, or even a bar pizza, the appetizers are a great way to start your meal, and they are sure to impress, no matter what you decide to order. However, an even more important consideration than the appetizer is what to drink. Although the Tavern has a full assortment of drinks and a full bar, it is very highly recommended that one tries one of their signature micro brewed beers with dinner. They are great tasting and definitely different.

Moving on to the main course though, the Kutztown Tavern offers a full menu and there are many choices. Whether one is hungry for a signature hamburger, fish and chips, a good steak or a unique and different salad, no one is going to be disappointed by the sheer amount of menu choices. The hamburgers are a great choice, the steak is always cooked to perfection. In fact, it seems nearly impossible to get a bad meal at the Kutztown Tavern.
Of all the restaurants in Kutztown, it is very possible that the Tavern may be one of the best. From the great atmosphere, friendly staff, interesting location and amazing food, it is truly difficult to find a better or more welcoming restaurant in the area. For those who live in Kutztown or are passing through the area, the Tavern is a must, it is not only great tasting, but it is unique as well. Very highly recommended.

As for the food it was very good. As for some of the bizarre policies...not so good. We had to have one check for the entire party of 24. We couldn't use credit cards for each portion (6 families) and because we came in together, we couldn't even sit at separate tables, so we could get separate checks. We were told since we came in as a group, we had to be one group. We were then told that there is an ATM across the street. So those without cash had to walk there and be charged a $3 service charge. To make matters worse, as they were exiting the restaurant, the manager (being a role model for all) was mocking our group. We then were over-charged for drinks that should have been included in the kids' meals and the children were never offered their ice cream sundaes that supposedly came with the meal. So if in town again, would I ever go there again...probably not even though they did have good food.
