Restaurant Reviews: Mama's Pizza, of Kutztown Pennsylvania

Just Stay Away from It

John Galt
Sometimes, you happen to walk into a restaurant you have never heard of before and just get lucky. The food is good, the people are nice, the service is fast and friendly, and the prices are reasonable. While this may not happen the majority of the time, it is definitely a nice experience when it does. However, sometimes the opposite can also be true as well. Of course, when the opposite is true, the experience of eating out can turn into something which is not only very unpleasant, but also something which one does not wish to repeat. Although it is sad to admit, one of those such experiences can be had at Mama's Pizza, located in the college town of Kutztown, Pennsylvania.

From the beginning, it may be difficult to tell what lies ahead for customers at Mama's. A spacious parking lot and even a building that is not sandwiched in between of many others separates Mama's from many of the other Kutztown restaurants. This illusion is also continued when one walks inside of the restaurant. The inside of Mama's is open, sparsely decorated, but still looks nice. However, perhaps the fact that there are few, if any, customers in Mama's, no matter what time one goes in, should alert one to the problems to come.

So, what are these problems that we refer to? Well, as soon as one gets past the nice looking interior and spacious exterior of the restaurant, it is easy to see that something is not quite right. From the rushed order taking and generally not very nice customer service, there are some definite issues with Mama's. However, there are many, many restaurants out there in the world that do not have great customer service, and for that reason, it may be possible to excuse Mama's if they had something else that made it worth looking for.

Sadly though, the eating experience at Mama's is perhaps one of the worst that can be found throughout all of Kutztown. However, pinning down the reason why the food actually is so bad is slightly harder than just saying that it is bad. Does the food taste bad? Not exactly; it just doesn't really taste like anything. Herein lies one of the strangest things about eating at Mama's, unless one is looking at the food, it is incredibly difficult to tell what one is eating. Everything just seems to taste exactly the same. The pizza, seemingly no matter when it has been cooked or prepared, is always incredibly dry and always tasteless. Most of the other food has either been cooked too long or left sitting around for hours before it actually came to you. In fact, there is not a single menu item at the restaurant that is worth the price (and this is saying a lot considering that Mama's has some of the lowest prices of any restaurant in Kutztown).

When one considers that there are truly good pizza places and Italian restaurants (such as Mark's and Camillo's) just a few blocks away, there is absolutely no reason why one should waste their money and their time on Mama's. Yes, after 12 at night or so it may be the only choice open to those who are hungry and want to eat out, but before that time comes around, Mama's should be avoided. The food is bad, the service is unfriendly, and the whole dining experience is one that most wish never to repeat.
