Restaurant Reviews: Market Street Bar and Grill of Bangor, Pennsylvania

New Ownership, Same Old Problems

John Galt
Walking around any given town or neighborhood will likely reward you being able to find roughly ten or fifteen "sport's bars". Sadly, however, these sports bars often have very little to offer, and end up being little more than disappointing. One restaurant that fit's perfectly into this pattern is the Market Street Bar and Grill of Bangor, Pennsylvania. Previously known as Frank's, the establishment has re-opened under new management, although many of the same problems remain the same.

Thankfully, the outside of the place has definitely been improved, and is now decorated with plants, large open windows, and various advertisements. While this may not seem like a big deal, for the generally poorly maintained lower Market Street area, having a business that manages to look nice is really something to be proud of. However, the good first impressions only lead to disappointment as soon as one walks through the front door.

Although the outside has been nicely maintained, one cannot say the same thing about the inside. The bar area is the first thing that one experiences, with the eating area being in another room directly behind. However, those who are searching for a pleasant place to drink will not be finding it at the Market Street Bar and Grill. No matter what time one walks in, the room always appears dark and unpleasant. Add this to the fact that the radio is turned up so loud that you can't hear yourself think, let alone the person next to you. Some of the tables seem as though they have not been cleaned in ages, and most of the drinks are excessively expensive.

Still though, maybe the food and the eating area is enough to redeem the sub par bar area? Sadly, this is not the case. The eating area is also poorly lit, and very rarely are the staff ever friendly or pleasant. However, perhaps this would be tolerable if the quality of the food was good. Once again, though, the Market Street Bar and Grill leads only to disappointment. There is very little on the menu which is not fried or consists of hamburger meat, and strangely, the food seems to be cold no matter what time it is ordered or how long it takes to come out. Not that the food is really worth waiting for anyway. Even if one manages to get incredibly lucky and gets a hot meal, the food still tastes stale and as if it has been sitting around for a while. Generally, the food is just very bland and somewhat tasteless. All of these factors come together to make Frank's a very poor place to eat and drink.

Thus, perhaps we have come to the point where we need to ask ourselves a question. If a sport's bar and grill has nether a pleasant or enjoyable place to sit and have a drink, nor food which is worth the price, and generally tastes very bad, what is the reason to go to such an establishment? In short, there is no reason, and the Market Street Sport's Bar and Grill should be avoided at all costs.
