Longport, New Jersey is a quiet little town on the outskirts of Atlantic City, New Jersey and is a great place to visit for some rest and relaxation during the summer months. Since Longport is only 36 blocks long, the restaurant choices are limited. The good news - there are many great restaurants in the neighboring towns of Margate, Somers Point, and Ocean City that are worth visiting.

The only restaurant in Longport is Chinese restaurant Fai's of Longport- not a bad option. Decent food, average priced meals. They have a bit of a different twist on some of the Chinese staples that you know and love. For example their fried rice - it is good, but unlike any other fried rice I have tasted. Although, I can't really tell what makes it unique. The sweet and sour shrimp is as you would expect - tasty, but nothing out of the ordinary. Fai's is a good option when you don't want to cook and would like some take-out.

When I am at the shore - I crave seafood. With Longport's limited (1) restaurants, you must travel to nearby towns to indulge. First stop - The Clam Bar (Smitty's) in Somers Point. Expect a bit of a wait, it is always crowded, but since it is BYOB - enjoy a glass of wine or a cold beer by the bay as you wait. The staff is made up of long time regulars, and a number of young people down for the summer. There is nothing fancy about this spot - simple table cloths, menu written on chalkboards, wine out of paper cups - but the food is fantastic. Their clam chowder should not be missed, and the steamers and clam strips are great.

I also highly recommend Dino's in Margate for the shore delicacy - Italian hoagies. They are the best - hands down. The bread is fresh - piled high with all the Italian meats that will raise your cholesterol by just looking at them. Also a no frills joint with only a few tables - come in knowing what you want and be prepared to wait. It is always crowded - but worth the wait.

Another great option in Margate is Luciano Lombarti's. This restaurant is a great place if you are looking for a nicer option, a wait staff, and a great meal by the bay. They have a lot on the menu, but don't miss the Milano pizza, the Ricola Toscano pasta, crab cakes, and for an appetizer try the calamari or capresse. A nice alternative to the casual, hoagie and fried food options that we all know and love.

Deluca's Diner on Ventor Ave in Margate is another great, inexpensive Italian restaurant that is great for kids. It has a casual red and white checked tablecloth environment and the food is quite good. Stick to pizzas and basic pasta dishes here, and you won't be disappointed.

So - although the choices are a bit limited in towns like Longport and Margate - these are a handful of great restaurants not to be missed while at the shore. Happy eating.
