Restore Hardwood Floors with Chemicals-Dust Free

Jamie Brown
Some people choose to cover worn hardwood floors with laminate coverings or a new layer of wood, but you might be able to restore the existing hardwood floors as another alternative. You can find home improvement products that will assist you in restoring your hardwood floors without having to rent and use heavy equipment. These products get rid of scratches and imperfections that make your floors look tired and worn out. You need 1) Chemical hardwood floor restoration kit (includes chemicals and applicator tools) and 2) Goggles and face mask to restore a hardwood floor with chemicals. Please do not attempt this project without reading the directions thoroughly and determining that you have the proper skills and tools to finish the job the right way.

1. Visit your local hardware store and ask a salesperson for a chemical hardwood floor restoration kit (also called a refinishing kit). These systems contain a series of chemically-based products that you use in steps (usually three steps) to restore a hardwood floor with chemicals.

2. Sweep the floor up thoroughly to remove dust and particles before you apply the products. Remove any nails and tacks so that you have a clean, relatively smooth surface. Put on a face mask and pair of goggles to avoid inhaling the fumes from the chemicals. Open the doors and windows of the home to ventilate when you're about to restore a hardwood floor with chemicals.

3. Apply the first phase of the hardwood restoration system-a chemical wash that roughens the top wood surface to prepare it for the next two steps in the process. This chemicals removes scratches and imperfections. Carefully apply the chemical to every inch of the floor (go with the grain of the floor in all steps) with the scrubbing tool provided with the kit and wipe up any excess chemical before you continue restoring your hardwood floor.

4. Proceed to the next product in the kit, which is a bonding chemical. This chemical helps harden the surface so that it is ready for the top coat. Use the same application tool that you used in step two only with a fresh pad and slowly apply this bonding chemical all over the surface.

5. Seal the floor with a coat or two of polyurethane mixture for the final step of the process of restoring your hardwood floor with chemicals (check the instructions that come with your kit for the suggested number of coats). This step makes the floor look smooth, shiny, and finished. Use the application brush provided with the kit to carefully coat the hardwood. Wait at least two hours between coats.

6. Wait between ten hours to a day to walk on the floor (very light traffic) and at least three days before you allow regular traffic to resume in the room after you restore your hardwood floor with chemicals.
