With the fight between Juan Urango and Devon Alexander the boxing world was finally going to see a unified champion at 140 (though in the eyes of many Timothy Bradley was unified in all but actuality having been stripped of his WBC title). The danger man Uranggo was widely avoided as he was high risk and low reward, hard hitting, strong the boxing version of a bull widely American Alexander "The Great" had been completely mismanaged by Don King. The meeting between the two promised to be one of the most important fights at 140.
Questions before hand included Would Urango land? Could Alexander move in and out for 12 rounds? Would Speed kill or would power land? And most importantly "Who will take t he titles home?
The first round saw Alexander landing almost at will, clever boxing with speed being the huge different, circling both ways the American looked class, active and swift. Urango would land a big shot at the end of the round which trainer Kevin Cunningham gave him an earful for taking. Se second went the same way though Urano would slowly come into it and actually probably take the third round. Though not landing as many shots as Alexander the Colombian was landing the right hook with more and more success. Though it had to be said it was only Urango's right hook that did seem to be giving any success.
The fourth saw Alexander coming up with a solution for those tricky right hooks, he started keeping the glove tucked into his chin more and probably took the 4th on everyone's score card. Urango was missing with the hooks during the fifth and although Alexander wasn't landing the effective and powerful counters instead relying on an accurate and busy jab from the outside. Although Alexander did ship a punch or two he never seemed particularly bothered by anything that was landed, seeming relaxed through out.
HBO had Alexander 50-45 after 5 rounds (I had it 49-46 having given Urango the 3rd) the 6th saw more action in the centre of the ring Alexander seemed happier to mix it up through was still out landing, out move and controlling the fight. The technique shown by Alexander was flawless and the speed seemed scary through out, not just hand but also foot and body movement. It was seemingly going to the plan for "The Great" though could he manage to avoid Urano's power through out the fight?
The 7th saw Urango landing a meaningful body punch and actually outland Alexander in power punches for the round. Urango seemed to show more skill defensively in the round but also better offensive skills. A huge uppercut in the 8th sent Urango down, the crowd went crazy and nobody expected him to go down, Urango was iron chinned wilst Alexander wasn't a noted puncher. Just seconds later he was down again from another uppercut. When he was up the referee waved it off. Although the stoppage seemed early and Urango did seem fine it was a matter of time.
Urango had been stopped for the first time in his career as Alexander had stated his case as being the best Light Welterweight in the world. Amir Khan, if your listening, you're far from the best young Light Welterweight out there, this guy is coming and really is "Great". He took on a puncher and stopped him.
Alexander's record now stands at 20-0 (13) and the WBC and IBF champion and on this performance he is the best fighter in the division. Timothy Bradley and Amir Khan better watch out.
