Looking for a day out at a reasonable price? Pay a visit to Retama Park, San Antonio's local horse racing track! Located at 1 Retama Parkway in Selma TX, on Interstate Thirty-Five (I35) just north of The Forum, it is easily accessible from nearly everywhere in the city. Retama boasts both indoor and outdoor facilities, allowing you to enjoy it no matter the weather. Additionally, the park has a bit of something for everyone, making it a great place for a family day out.
Thanks to movies and television, many people associate horse tracks with illegal bookies and other shady dealers but I assure you that has not been my experience. Retama maintains a clean and family friendly atmosphere with many novelties catering to children; including face painting and even the track's mascot Longshot who leads a group of the younger track patrons in a chorus of YMCA near the Winner's Circle.
Retama hosts a four month live racing schedule but is also open year around for simulcast play. Live racing is offered from July 1st through October 15th with races beginning at 6:45PM CST. For the family looking for a unique day out of the house, show up early and enjoy the meticulously manicured grounds. There is plenty to do before the race. You can grab a meal in the clubhouse or enjoy some of the concession fare outdoors. You can head for the stables to get an up close view of the horses that are running that day; or you can just take a relaxing stroll around the park.
For the adult seeking a different type of night out, there is also much enjoyment to be found here for you. Retama is equipped with full bars, a smoking friendly clubhouse level (complete with waitresses) which carries a five dollar cover, and of course the ponies! With bets as low as ten cents, twenty or thirty bucks can buy you a few hours of good times. If you are after some excitement, be sure to attend on Fifty Cent Saturday which holds more of a party atmosphere.
Retama is a truly unique experience in San Antonio. Though the park is only sixteen years old, it has a nostalgic mystique to it that feels like early America. So make it a point to go out and spend a day at the track; you might like it more than you think!
